Bruce Ward, Escondido High’s athletic director, will name himself head football coach at the school today. Ward takes over for Tom Everest, who resigned to become defensive coordinator for the Columbia Cougars of the Professional Spring Football League.

Everest compiled a 17-37 record at Escondido over five seasons, but he led the Cougars to 6-6 marks and playoff appearances the past two seasons.

Ward had coached the offensive and defensive line under Everest the last three years. Before coming to Escondido, Ward compiled a 22-17 record in four years at Forest Hills High in Atlanta and a 23-17 mark in four years at Windsor High in Oklahoma City.

“Tom did a good job for us,” Ward said. “I hope we can carry on what he got started,”

Ward said Everest is taking a semester sabbatical from the district and could return to Escondido next year, possibly as Ward’s defensive coordinator.
