Morris Opts for St. Mary’s Over CSUN

Cree Morris, the 6-foot-7 San Diego State quarterback who had been considering a transfer to Cal State Northridge, announced that he has chosen to enroll at St. Mary’s.

While the Matadors lost on one front Wednesday, they gained on another Thursday, signing Ivy Calvin, an inside linebacker from Bakersfield College.

Morris, who started the first four games last season for the Aztecs, had narrowed his choices to Northridge, St. Mary’s and UC Davis. He eliminated Northridge from consideration because of the presence of tailback Jamal Farmer, a transfer from Hawaii who is expected to carry the brunt of the offensive load next season.

Calvin (6-3, 220 pounds) is the first defensive player Northridge has signed for next season. Previously, the Matadors added five junior college players and two transfers--all of whom play on offense.

In another announcement Thursday, Pierce College Coach Bill Norton said that Brahma players LaShante Parker, Shannon Culver and John Johnson had either signed with or made commitments to four-year schools.

Parker, the leading rusher (1,366 yards) and scorer (102 points) in the Western State Conference, committed to Nevada.

Culver, a wide receiver who had 27 receptions for 399 yards and three touchdowns, signed a scholarship offer to attend Idaho.

Johnson, a free safety, made a commitment to Fresno State.

All three attended Palmdale High. Parker and Culver were All-WSC South Division selections in 1991.
