Avocado League

Carlsbad 47, El Camino 40 (OT)--El Camino, which had won only two games, almost pulled off the upset of the year against second-ranked Carlsbad (14-2, 9-0).

“They may have taken us lightly, but our kids came to play,” El Camino Coach Terry Scaife said. “Earlier in the day, my girlfriend told me, ‘You guys are going to upset them.’ I kind of laughed.”

Carlsbad’s Holly Gerdes tied it at 40-40 with 12 seconds left in regulation on an eight-foot baseline jumper. El Camino’s Lisa Flores had a chance to win it, but her shot hit the side of rim from 21 feet at the buzzer. Flores, a sophomore center, scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Gerdes took over in overtime, scoring all seven of Carlsbad’s points. Dawn Laukes added 10 for the Lancers, who played the last quarter without Vanessa Nygaard, their leading scorer. Nygaard fouled out with 10 points in the third quarter.
