The Southern Section basketball playoffs began this week with seven Glendale-area boys’ teams and six girls’ teams participating.

La Canada (22-2) is the top-seeded boys’ team in Division 3-A, and Ribet Academy (16-6) is the top-seeded Division 5 team. Both have first-round byes.

In Division 1-AA wild-card games Tuesday, Glendale (15-11) played host to Antelope Valley (9-15), and Hoover (12-12) played host to Santa Ana (6-18). Flintridge Prep (8-14) traveled to Oakwood (6-11) for a Division 5-AA wild-card game.

Crescenta Valley (14-10) plays host to Agoura (15-8) in a first-round 2-AA game and St. Francis (8-16) is at home against Santa Margarita (17-8) in a first-round 3-AA game Friday night.

In the girls’ Division 1-AA first-round games on Saturday, Hoover is at Palmdale, and Glendale will host either Antelope Valley or Victor Valley. Flintridge Sacred Heart hosts Cantwell-Sacred Heart in a 4-A game.

In Division 3-A, La Canada will host Dos Pueblos.

Ribet Academy has a first-round bye in Division 5-A.

Glendale Adventist plays host to Desert in a 5-AA wild-card game Wednesday.

Southern Section soccer playoffs also began this week with three Glendale-area boys’ teams and two girls’ teams participating.

The La Canada boys, the top-seeded team in Division 1-A, will play host to Mountain View today.

St. Francis is at Bishop Montgomery, and Glendale is at Arroyo Grande in 2-A games Friday.

The La Canada girls will host either Crescenta Valley or Hart in a 3-A game Friday.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College men’s basketball team concludes its regular season with road games tonight at Bakersfield and Saturday at College of the Canyons.

Glendale entered the week 13-13 overall and 3-4 in the Southern Division of the Western State Conference.

The Vaqueros, who played Valley College Wednesday night, are still in contention for a spot in the 26-team Southern California playoffs.

“Winning all three this week would be unbelievable, and winning two might get us a decent seed in the playoffs,” Glendale Coach Brian Beauchemin said. “Losing three wouldn’t eliminate us, but it would certainly put us on the bubble.”

COLLEGES

The Occidental men’s basketball team entered the week riding an improbable two-game win streak in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

After winning only once in 10 games, the Tigers defeated conference-leading Cal Lutheran, 97-87, and defending SCIAC champion La Verne, 77-72.

Occidental was scheduled to play at Cal Lutheran on Feb. 12, but Occidental administrators postponed the game because heavy rains made travel to Thousand Oaks difficult.

On Thursday afternoon, with five hours notice, Occidental trekked to Cal Lutheran. Fortunately for Occidental, sophomore forward Blair Slattery made the trip. Slattery, who was expected to miss the rest of the season because of a hand injury suffered in practice two weeks ago, led the Tigers with 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Occidental entered the week 9-12 overall and 3-7 in conference.

The Tigers will host the Fighting Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz Friday and then resume SCIAC play Saturday night at Cal Tech.

The Occidental women’s basketball team entered the week 10-10 overall and 6-3 in the SCIAC. The Tigers had won seven of eight games.

Junior center Stephanie Francis was the key player for Occidental last week in a 74-58 victory over Claremont and a 64-48 victory over Whittier.

Francis scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds against Claremont. She scored 21 points and had seven rebounds against Whittier.

Occidental travels to La Verne for a SCIAC game Friday.

The California Interscholastic Federation and Reebok will award $2,000 scholarships to the boy and girl who are selected scholar athlete of the year.

Applications for the awards are available at high school counseling offices. Each school can nominate two athletes.

The application deadline is April 3, and judging will be completed May 11. The awards will be presented June 6 in Cerritos.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Margarito Casillas, Hoover--Casillas, a junior, won the boys’ two-mile event at last weekend’s Sunkist Invitational track and field meet at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

Casillas, who finished second at the Kinney national cross-country championships in San Diego last fall, won the Sunkist race in 9 minutes 26 seconds, which was five seconds off his converted personal best (from 3,200 meters) set last season.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Hung Duong, Occidental--Duong, a sophomore guard for the men’s basketball team, had 14 points, including 10 consecutive free throws down the stretch, during the Tigers’ 97-87 victory over Cal Lutheran.

Duong, who played at Alhambra High, also had 22 points--including eight consecutive free throws--and five assists in the Tigers’ 77-72 victory over Whittier.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Justin Lord--Lord, a former All-Western State Conference basketball player at Glendale College, is averaging 6.4 points and 1.5 rebounds in 16 minutes a game for Westmont College.

Lord, a 6-foot-6 junior forward, was an All-Rio Hondo League player at La Canada High.

Westmont is 15-10 overall and 6-3 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

MISCELLANY

The Amateur Athletic Foundation Rose Bowl Aquatic Center is sponsoring a triathlon on Sunday. . . . The Crescenta Valley High drill team is in the midst of a fund-raising drive to help finance its trip to the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
