Lynwood Gets Top Seed in CIF Playoff Pairings

The Lynwood High School boys’ basketball team, which won the San Gabriel Valley League title, was seeded first when the CIF Southern Section playoff pairings were announced earlier this week.

The Knights (21-5) will play host to Hoover of Glendale in a Division I-AA game Friday. Hoover defeated Santa Ana, 74-63, in a qualifying game Tuesday night.

Lynwood defeated Capistrano Valley of Mission Viejo (23-3), which is seeded No. 2, earlier in the season. Other area teams in the division include Wilson, El Rancho, Schurr, Jordan, Bell Gardens, Millikan, Paramount, Poly, Lakewood and Warren.

Dominguez, which finished second to Lynwood in the San Gabriel Valley League, will play host to Inglewood on Friday in a I-A game. Gahr, the San Gabriel Valley League at-large team, will play at Garey High of Pomona on Friday in a II-AA game, and Artesia, seeded No. 2, will play host to Beverly Hills.

All boys games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

In girls basketball, Gahr (22-3) is the top-seeded team in II-AA. The Gladiators will play host to the winner of a wild-card game. Artesia, which finished second in the Suburban League, plays at Garden Grove in another II-AA game.

In I-AA, second-seeded Lynwood plays a wild-card winner. Other teams in the division include Lakewood, Millikan, Bell Gardens and El Rancho.

Girls playoff games will be played at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

In soccer, the boys’ team at Cerritos (3-A) and Bell Gardens (2-A) and the girls’ team from La Serna (2-A) are top-seeded in their divisions.

San Gabriel Valley League champion Cerritos (17-1-4) plays host to Dos Pueblos of Goleta (8-6-4) today. On Friday, Whitmont League champion Bell Gardens (21-1-1) plays host to the winner of a wild-card game between Esperanza and Indio. Whitmont League girls’ champion La Serna (16-1-2) plays host to Rowland (9-7-1) this afternoon.

All soccer games begin at 3 p.m.

Other boys’ teams that will compete in the playoffs include 3-A schools Millikan, Jordan, Lynwood, Wilson and Dominguez, 2-A schools La Serna and Montebello, 1-A schools Artesia, La Mirada and John Glenn (1-A) and small schools Valley Christian, Whitney, Cantwell, St. Anthony and Pius X.

Other girls’ teams competing in the playoffs include 3-A schools Poly, Wilson and Millikan, 2-A schools Cerritos, California and Mayfair and 1-A schools St. Anthony and Valley Christian.
