Nelson Stops Fenech in the Eighth Round

World Boxing Council super-featherweight champion Azumah Nelson of Ghana retained his title Saturday with an eighth-round technical knockout of Jeff Fenech of Australia in Brisbane, Australia.
Nelson knocked Fenech down in the first and second rounds and hurt the challenger with two left hooks in the eighth. Referee Arthur Mercante stopped the bout with 40 seconds left in the round.
Nelson improved to 34-2-1 with 26 knockouts. Fenech dropped to 26-1-1. The two fought to a draw last June in Las Vegas.
On the undercard, former World Boxing Assn. light heavyweight champion Virgil Hill (31-1) won a unanimous 10-round decision from Aundrey Nelson (17-2).
