ROUNDUP : 5 Ventura Pitchers Join Forces to Stop Cerritos, 4-1

Five pitchers combined to allow only four hits as Ventura College handed Cerritos a 4-1 loss in a nonconference baseball game Thursday at Cerritos.

Andy Moffatt, Jason Isaacs, Karl Whitnall, Sam Arroyo and Pete Alamillo combined to strike out four and walk one for Ventura (8-3).

Whitnall (1-1), a freshman from Hueneme High, threw two innings of one-hit relief to earn the win.

Alamillo struck out Cerritos’ No. 5 hitter, who represented the tying run, to end the game and earn his third save.

Steve Philbrook’s two-run double in the eighth turned a one-run game into a three-run Ventura lead.

In other college baseball games:

Canyons 6, Santa Monica 2--Mitch Bowen, a sophomore right-hander from St. Francis High, pitched 8 2/3 shutout innings en route to Canyons’ first complete game.

Bowen (3-2) scattered two runs on six hits in the Western State Conference game. He struck out five and walked two.

Bowen retired the first two batters in the top of the ninth before a walk, an error and two singles led to two runs. But he hung on to earn his third victory in a row.

Canyons (5-9, 2-1 in WSC play) had six singles among its seven hits and was helped by eight walks. Walter White had a run-scoring single in the three-run eighth and Ari Jacobs drove in another run with a groundout.

George Lopata reached base three times for Canyons and had a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Valley 7, Bakersfield 6--Mike Engler was two for four at the plate and retired the final batter of the game from the mound to earn his first save for host Valley (7-9, 2-1) in the WSC game.

Mark David and Tim Weir each hit solo home runs for Valley, which entered the ninth inning with a 7-1 lead.

L.A. City 9, Mission 5--Dereck Ornelas was three for four and drove in two runs for Mission (2-8-1, 0-2) in a Southern California Athletic Conference loss at L.A. City.

Mission pitchers James Encinas, Frank Serna and Canto Franco were pounded for 15 hits.

Former Chatsworth standout Nestor Martinez doubled for L.A. City.

The Master’s 8, Azusa Pacific 4--Rick Simpson (2-0) scattered four runs on seven hits over nine innings and Tony McCaughtry hit two home runs for The Master’s (7-9) in an NAIA District 3 game at home.

The Master’s collected 11 hits off four pitchers. E. J. Pape and Darin Brebes doubled and Joe Pence and Andy Martin tripled.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

El Camino Real 10, Franklin 0--Senior right-hander Terry Morrow (1-0) retired eight of the first 11 batters on strikeouts in a rescheduled San Fernando tournament opener for both teams at El Camino Real.

Morrow allowed four hits through five innings, struck out eight and walked one. First baseman Evan Howland homered, doubled and drove in two runs.

Junior catcher Justin Balser was three for three and drove in three runs for El Camino Real, which also got RBIs from Dan Cey and Justin Marine.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Taft d. Crespi, 15-12, 12-15, 15-11, 15-6--Danny Kim had 10 kills and Casey Sheahan added nine to lead host Taft in a nonleague opener.

Eric Lee added nine blocks for Taft.

Alemany d. Quartz Hill, 15-13, 15-6, 13-15, 6-15, 16-14--Ariel Bernardo and Eric Younker each had 16 kills to lead Alemany in a nonleague opener at Alemany.

Village Christian d. Hillcrest, 15-6, 15-11, 7-15, 15-12--Village Christian opened its season with a nonleague win at home.

Nordhoff d. St. Joseph, 15-3, 15-9, 17-15--Kevin Cochran had 30 kills to lead Nordhoff to a sweep in a nonleague opener at St. Joseph.

HIGH SCHOOL GOLF

Alemany 192, Harvard-Westlake 239--Alemany’s Jason Rosenfeld fired an even-par 35 to lead Alemany (2-0) in a nonleague match at Porter Valley Country Club.

Scott Heyn and Glen Musser each shot 37 for Alemany.

Hart 347, Littlerock 493--Hart senior Jason Gore, who has signed a letter of intent to play at Arizona, shot a one-over 62 to earn medalist honors for Hart in a nonleague opener at Vista Valencia Golf Course.

Adam Hill added a 68 for Hart and teammate Steve Farris, a freshman, shot 69.
