Roche begins his 10th year at the helm of the Laguna Beach program and hopes the Artists can find some way to finish third in the league. “Trabuco Hills and Laguna Hills are the class of the league,” Roche said. “But I don’t see any dominant teams after those two.” Leading the Artists is shortstop Moore, who hit .323 and drove in a team-high 21 runs last season in 19 games. As a sophomore, Moore led the county in runs batted in with 37. Also returning is Hammond, who figures to be the Artists’ cleanup hitter. Hammond led Laguna Beach last season by hitting .342. Scoring runs shouldn’t be a big problem for Laguna Beach, but allowing runs could be the Artists’ downfall. Moore and Hammond anchor a solid defense, but the biggest question is the Artists’ pitching. Although only a freshman, Stemmler earned the top pitching spot by throwing strikes, and that’s all Roche will ask of her. “Stemmler’s never pitched before, but she gets the ball over the plate and we have a strong defense behind her. But that’s what we want, people to put the ball in play against us.” In Laguna Beach’s first two games, the Artists lost, 12-11, and won, 9-8.
