OUTLOOK

Softball has been a hard sport to sell to Corona del Mar girls, and the Sea Kings are therefore usually badly overmatched in the Sea View League. But Smyth, in her fifth season, believes things might finally be turning around. The Newport Beach community has set up a youth softball program, so many more are being introduced to the sport before they reach high school. Smyth still had to hold a crash course on the fundamentals before the season, but many of the returning players began practice on their own. “We have a pitcher who’s going to pitching school this year, and she barely knew what softball was before last year,” Smyth said. Mittman, the pitcher, had a 7.80 earned-run average last season, but the lessons should help her bring that down. The Sea Kings are the most inexperienced team in the league with six freshmen, six sophomores, one junior and one senior. Wilson, the lone senior, will provide leadership at first base. Kane, a sophomore catcher, batted .300 last season, the team’s highest average. Amoli, a good athlete from basketball, will anchor the outfield in left.
