COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Streak Hits 8 Before Loss

Chapman won their eighth consecutive game by defeating UC Irvine, 7-3, in the first of two games Saturday at Hart Park in Orange.

But in a second game, the Panthers’ longest winning streak of the season ended with a 10-6 loss to Utah.

Against Irvine, Chapman led, 3-0, after two innings, and took a 7-1 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Guseffi went three for three with two runs batted in, and John Coleman (3-1) pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits, striking out six and walking three.

John Damush had a double and a home run for UC Irvine (13-9). Kevin Cook and Cliff Anderson each had two hits for Chapman.

Cliff Anderson had a two-run single in the fifth to give Chapman (20-8) a 5-4 lead over Utah (5-13), but Mike Oziminski hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to give the Utes the lead for good.

Rob Reimers had a double, a triple and scored a run for Chapman.

In Big West Conference baseball:

Cal State Fullerton 16, New Mexico State 7--Cal State Fullerton hit five home runs for the second consecutive game in Las Cruces.

Fullerton third baseman Phil Nevin hit two and had four RBIs to lead the Titans (19-6, 4-1 in conference). Nevin, who had three hits, has 12 homers this season.

Frank Herman also had three hits and three RBIs for Fullerton, and Craig Fairbrother hit his fourth home run in his past three conference games. Fullerton pitcher James Popoff (4-1) earned the victory, going seven innings while striking out 12.

Efrain Lara hit two home runs for New Mexico State (8-19, 0-5).

In the third-place game of the National Bible College men’s basketball tournament:

Pacific Christian 101, San Jose Christian 81--Phil Garcia scored 31 points and had 20 rebounds and Ime Odouk added 22 points and 23 rebounds for Pacific Christian (24-18) in the victory at the Sutton Center in Oklahoma City. Bob Gaskill added 18 points for Pacific Christian. Garcia and Gaskill were named to the all-tournament team.

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 0-2, Nevada Las Vegas 3-0--Tiffany Boyd pitched a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts for host Fullerton (15-11, 6-4) in the second game to split the doubleheader with the Rebels (15-8, 5-5). Boyd, a Woodbridge High graduate, also hit a second-inning home run.

Lori Harrigan pitched a two-hit shutout in the first game for the fifth-ranked Rebels. Cheryl Longeway, a freshman from Kennedy High, took the loss for the No. 10 Titans.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Texas A&M; 5, UC Irvine 3--Mark Weaver, ranked 59th nationally, beat No. 30 Brett Hansen-Dent of Irvine, 6-4, 6-4 in No. 1 singles. Brett Stern, Aaron Stolpman, and Chris Tontz posted Irvine’s singles victories.
