The end of basketball season signals the end of the coaching year for many winter sports coaches, but not Eagle Rock’s Bill Whiting.

Whiting led the Eagle Rock boys’ basketball team to its first league championship since 1983 and a spot in the City Section 3-A Division playoffs. The Eagles lost to South Gate, 63-61, in the first round, but Whiting did not pout about his team’s misfortune.

He did not have time.

Twenty hours after Eagle Rock’s elimination in basketball, Whiting stepped into his role as the school’s volleyball coach--and he took seven of his 10 basketball players with him.

“After the loss I just said, ‘See you tomorrow,’ and we were on the volleyball court the next day,” said Whiting, who is in his third season as volleyball coach.

With outside hitter Larry Corbi leading the way, the Eagles are 2-2. Both of Eagle Rock’s losses have come against Northern Conference favorite Marshall--once in the final of the Sylmar tournament and Monday in the Northern Conference opener.

The La Canada boys’ volleyball team lost to South Torrance in three games in the championship match of the Arcadia Invitational tournament Sunday.

The Spartans defeated Crespi in the quarterfinals and Canyon in the semifinals.

Crescenta Valley improved its record to 5-1 by defeating Quartz Hill in four games Friday.

Eleven seniors from Glendale-area schools will participate Saturday night in the West San Gabriel Valley All-Star game at La Canada High.

Yvette Hassakoursian of Ribet Academy, Tenley Givens and Irene Huang of La Canada, Karen Pindron of Flintridge Sacred Heart and Shawna Sherburne of Flintridge Prep will play for the West team in the girls’ game at 6.

Ryan Asplund and Jimmy Evans of La Canada, Anthony Carruthers of St. Francis, Lydell Hill of Ribet Academy, Andrew Krystowiak of Flintridge Prep and Josh Willis of Crescenta Valley will play for the West team in the boys’ game at 8.

Jennifer Dalton of Glendale was selected as the Pacific League’s most valuable player in girls’ basketball.

Tracy Young of Glendale, Nancy Evans of Hoover and Sarah Hegman of Crescenta Valley were named first-team all-league.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College baseball team suffered one of its worst defeats in history last week when Pierce defeated the Vaqueros, 25-1.

Glendale pitchers allowed 23 hits and the Vaqueros committed eight errors during the loss that dropped them to 6-12 overall and 2-6 in the Western State Conference.

Glendale has a bye today in the WSC and will resume conference play Saturday at Ventura.

Glendale’s men’s tennis team improved its record to 8-2 with a 5-1 victory over Cuesta on March 19.

Sophomore Ashot Smbatyan, Glendale’s No. 1 singles player, remained unbeaten this season. Brian Wildason, a freshman from Burbank who plays No. 4 singles, also is unbeaten.

The Vaqueros play at Bakersfield on Thursday.

The Southern California heptathlon and decathlon championships will be held this weekend at Bakersfield College.

Glendale’s men’s and women’s track teams will compete at the Northridge Relays Saturday.

COLLEGES

Occidental College is in the midst of spring break.

The Tiger baseball team is 6-11 overall and 1-8 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Senior catcher Bob Kennedy is batting .321 with a home run and three runs batted in for Occidental, which resumes its schedule Tuesday with a nonconference game against Macalester College.

Occidental College will be the site of the 50th annual Pasadena Relays this Saturday.

More than 50 high school teams are expected to compete.

Opening ceremonies featuring several former Olympians will begin at 4 p.m.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

David Pratt, Crescenta Valley--Pratt, an outside hitter, had 23 kills for the Falcons’ volleyball team in a five-game victory over Palmdale. He also had 12 kills in Crescenta Valley’s four-game win over Quartz Hill that improved the Falcons’ record to 5-1.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Billy Morris, USC--Morris, a former All-Southern Section shortstop at St. Francis High, has stolen a team-high 13 bases for USC, which entered the week 15-14 overall and 6-6 in the Pacific 10 Conference.

Morris, a senior, is playing outfield for the Trojans. He is batting .276.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Heather Lindstrom--Lindstrom, a former standout softball player at Crescenta Valley High, is 3-5 with a 1.90 earned-run average for Cal State Northridge.

Lindstrom, a senior, has three shutouts for the Matadors, who entered the week with a 20-17 record.

MISCELLANY

Youth Gymnastics teams from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina and Great Britain will compete in two meets this weekend at Glendale High. The event is hosted by the Verdugo Gymnastics Club, which recently received a grant of more than $19,000 from the Amateur Athletic Foundation.
