Lynwood Players, Coach of the Year Score a Near Sweep : Girls: Lynwood center Ja’net Davis is named the season’s top player. The Kansas-bound athlete averaged 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Power forwards and scoring guards dominated the area this season, but it was a senior center Ja’net Davis, who averaged 18 points and 14 rebounds, was voted player of the year in leading Lynwood High to a 28-3 record. Her coach, Maurice Roberson, was chosen coach of the year.

Members of the team will be honored during a breakfast at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Sheraton Hotel in Cerritos.

The team was chosen primarily on the basis of ballots cast by area coaches. Here is the South Coast team:

Ja’net Davis, Lynwood--Edged out two others for area player of the year honors. “I believe she is the most mobile and best shooting center in the country,” Lynwood Coach Roberson said. A Parade Magazine All-American, the 6-foot-4 senior center transferred from Morningside High of Inglewood last fall after her former coach, Ron Randle, left Morningside to become the boys basketball coach at Hawthorne High. She will attend Kansas.

Allison Arredondo, Gahr--Second in the balloting for player of the year. The 6-foot-2 senior center averaged 16 points and 8 rebounds. She received high marks from coaches. “A great team player,” Millikan Coach Lorene Morgan said. Poly’s Ed Gaffney called her a “top center-forward.” Arredondo has signed to play for UCLA.

Shanika Porter, Paramount--Near the top with Arredondo in the balloting for player of the year. “A tough ballplayer,” Roberson said. The 5-foot-9 junior forward averaged 21 points and 16 rebounds.

LaTasha Burnett, Lynwood--A 5-foot-7 senior guard, she averaged 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

Nicole Gaines, Poly--She is recovering from off-season foot surgery, but when she is healthy she will play for Cal State Long Beach. One of the top players in the Moore League, the 6-foot forward averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists.

Akia Hardy, Lakewood--Also headed for Cal State Long Beach. A 5-foot-6 senior point guard, she averaged 15 points, 8.5 assists and 5 rebounds. Gaffney believes she was the top point guard in the area. She set a school record for career assists.

Toshiba Metoyer, Lakewood--The 6-foot-2 senior post has signed with Duquesne. She averaged 21.5 points, 14 rebounds and 3 assists. Her shooting accuracy was 63% from the field and 70% from the line. “She was the only player in the Moore League to be in double figures every game,” Lancer Coach Dow Lawson said.

Kristine Waldorf, Gahr--”The best ballhandler in the area,” according to opposing Coach Gaffney of Poly. The 5-foot-6 senior guard was not called on to shoot a lot, but averaged 5 assists. “A good player,” said Lynwood’s Roberson.

Taniko Hilbert, Millikan--A 5-foot-8 off-guard who posted up a lot. She averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds, and had game highs of 31 points and 15 rebounds. Coach Lawson of Lakewood called her “a very good athlete,” while Poly’s Gaffney went one better, calling her the best athlete in the area. She will attend UCLA.

Karen Nunnally, Mayfair--The 5-foot-9 1/2 senior center made the all-star team on the ballot recommendations of three opposing coaches. She averaged 17 points and 13 rebounds. She will attend BYU, but might not play basketball while studying to become a physical therapist.

Coach of the year:

Maurice Roberson, Lynwood--He led the Knights to a 28-3 record. Two of those losses were to the nation’s top-ranked high school team, Peninsula High. The first time was in the Southern Section I-AA championship game. The second came in the state CIF regional championship. The Knights won the San Gabriel Valley League title with a 12-0 record.
