Add volleyball: Newport Harbor’s 15-13 loss to Palos Verdes Peninsula in the semifinals of the Dos Pueblos tournament last week proved costly for the Sailors.

Newport Harbor, top-ranked in the Southern Section 4-A coaches’ preseason poll, slipped to third behind Peninsula and Los Angeles Loyola in the first regular-season poll.

Irvine, Capistrano Valley and Laguna Beach, unranked in the preseason, moved up to fourth, fifth and seventh, respectively. Huntington Beach, ranked eighth in the preseason, dropped out of the top 10 despite a 8-1 start.

Esperanza is ranked third in Division 3-A. In Division 2-A, Whittier Christian is top-ranked, Calvary Chapel is fourth and Capistrano Valley Christian is ninth.
