Dominguez Hills Defeats CCAA Leader Riverside, 5-1

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team parlayed five UC Riverside errors into three runs in a 5-1 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory Thursday at Carson.

The Toros, ranked 10th in NCAA Division II by Collegiate Baseball magazine, and the Highlanders, ranked third, will play single games today at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Riverside.

In Thursday’s victory, Dominguez Hills took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when Miguel Medina struck out, but reached on a wild pitch. He stole second, and after a walk to Lorenzo Redick and a bunt single by Greg Bergeron, Troy Dunlap walked to force in a run.

Ernie Soto then singled to left field to drive in run. Tom Ball earned the victory and improved to 7-2. The Toros are 16-11-1 and in second place in conference play at 7-3. Riverside, which leads the conference at 9-4, is 21-10 overall.

On Tuesday, Dominguez Hills beat Cal Poly Pomona, 10-0. The Toros were led senior pitcher Mark Tranberg, who allowed only two hits to improve to 4-2.

The Dominguez Hills softball team swept a doubleheader from CS San Bernardino, 3-1, 3-2, on Thursday.

In the opener, the Toros scored twice in the second as Melissa Punch doubled with two outs and scored on triple by Lety Carranza. Carranza scored on single by Nicole Spelter.

Julie Borquez (7-4) earned the victory.

In the second game, Gloria Saldana’s two-out single scored Carranza for a 1-0 lead. Dominguez Hills scored again in the fourth on a San Bernardino error.

San Bernardino tied the score on two Toro errors, but Melissa Ocosta drove in the game-winning run with a one-out ground out to score Jenny Martin in the sixth.

Anne Ibarra (13-6) earned the victory as Dominguez Hills improved to 19-11 and 4-4 in the CCAA.

The Toros will play perennial CCAA power Chapman in a doubleheader at noon Saturday in Carson. Chapman, the defending conference champion, is 17-10 and 0-2.

On Tuesday, the Toros were swept Tuesday by Cal State Bakersfield, 2-1 in 10 innings and 3-0. Bakersfield is ranked second in Division II.

Dominguez Hills has been led by senior shortstop Jennifer Lueck, who is batting .400 with 14 runs batted in, and Julie Berthiaume, who is batting .391 with 16 RBIs. Carranza, a senior catcher, has a team-leading 21 RBIs and .354 batting average.

Cecilio Espino is scheduled to defend his North American Boxing Federation bantamweight title against Antonio Ramirez on Tuesday night at the Forum.

The 22-year-old Espino (21-2, 18 knockouts) will be making his initial defense of the NABF belt he won Jan. 26 on an 11-round technical knockout of Luigi Camputaro in Indianapolis. Ramirez is 12-2-1 with seven knockouts.

In undercard bouts, Mexico’s Jose De Jesus Garcia (19-2, 14 KOs) will fight former World Boxing Assn. junior bantamweight champion Julio Gervacio (20-3-2, 17 KOs) of the Dominican Republic and Craig Peavy of Australia and Robert Byrd of Texas battle in a featherweight bout.

The card begins at 7.

Despite losing two of three doubles matches, the Loyola Marymount women’s tennis team defeated Cal State Northridge, 6-3, Thursday at Loyola.

Registration is underway for 16-inch, slow-pitch softball leagues that start May 4 in Manhattan Beach.

The cost is $365 a team including a $50 refundable forfeit fee.

Team managers must attend an organizational meeting at 7:30 p.m. either Wednesday or Thursday at Joslyn Center, 1601 Valley Drive, Manhattan Beach. The men’s teams meet Wednesday and the women meet Thursday.
