For the second consecutive year, Charisse Sampson of Washington High was selected Central City girl player of the year and heads the The Times’ 1992 All-Star Girls and Boys Basketball Team.

Sampson, a three-time All-Central City selection, completed her prep career as the city’s all-time scoring and rebounding leader. The 5-foot-11 senior, who will attend Kansas, averaged 27.1 points and 17 rebounds in leading Washington to its fourth consecutive City 4-A Division championship.

Teammate Keshana Ledet, who averaged 21 points and 13 rebounds, is also a repeat performer, along with Ruth Flores of Jefferson and Cathleen Grice of Crenshaw.

Flores, a 5-7 senior guard, averaged 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Grice, a 5-4 junior guard, averaged 15.7 points and nine assists.

Two sophomore guards, Denise Caudillo of Roosevelt and Kyetra Brown of Jefferson, head the list of first-time selections. Caudillo averaged 20 points and nine rebounds in leading the Roughriders to their second consecutive City 3-A Division championship game, while Brown averaged 14.1 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.

Guard Brandon Martin of Washington, who made The Times’ San Fernando Valley team last year, heads the boys’ Central City team this year. Martin, a 6-4 guard who transferred from Reseda Cleveland to Washington, was voted player of the year after averaging 31 points and six rebounds for the Generals.

Sophomore forward Toby Bailey of Loyola, who averaged 22.3 points and seven rebounds, is the only repeater on the boys’ team. He is joined by Fremont’s Todd Whitehead, who averaged 19.5 points and seven rebounds in leading the Pathfinders to their second consecutive City 3-A Division title.

Other selections include Alfred Durazo of Lincoln, Victor Dean of Pilgrim and Henry Lara of Huntington Park.

The players on the first team, along with their parents and coaches, will be guests of The Times at an awards breakfast today at Les Freres Taix restaurant.
