HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Gibbons Extends Scoreless Streak to 31 Innings in Oak Park Win

Oak Park High right-hander Jeff Gibbons threw a four-hitter Tuesday and increased his scoreless-innings streak to 31 in a 1-0, eight-inning victory over host St. Bonaventure in a Tri-Valley League baseball game.

Gibbons (5-0) struck out 11 and walked one for Oak Park (6-3, 3-1 in league play). He has not allowed an earned run this season in 33 innings.

Gibbons outdueled Jeff Wright of St. Bonaventure, who allowed three hits, struck out 10 and walked one.

Oak Park pushed across the game’s only run in the eighth when Eric Kane reached base on an infield throwing error, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored when the catcher’s throw to third sailed into left field.

In other baseball games:

Moorpark 4, Carpinteria 1--Jason Adamson had a run-scoring double in the third inning to account for the winning run in the Tri-Valley League game.

Sophomore left-hander Mike Vasquez of Moorpark (8-0, 3-0) improved to 5-0 by pitching a five-hitter with five strikeouts.

Saugus 5, Palmdale 3 (eight innings)--Justin Minkler, Chris Hernandez and Scott Minkler each had two hits as Saugus (6-3, 3-0) rallied to win a Golden League game at Palmdale.

Van Nuys 3, Poly 2--Benjamin Navarette (1-1) threw an eight-hitter, walked two and struck out none in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Poly.

Frank Medina and Pascual Munguia each had two hits for Poly (6-4, 3-2). Alex Alvaranga and Patrick Alvarado each had two hits for Van Nuys (4-5, 1-4).

Sylmar 4, Birmingham 3--Sylmar (7-5, 5-0) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.

Jimmy Lemos, the winning pitcher in relief, doubled with one out and stole third with two out. Juan Flores followed with a walk. A balk brought in Lemos and Flores scored on a throwing error.

Canoga Park 9, North Hollywood 4--Glenn Davis homered and Jeff Perea had three runs batted in as Canoga Park (2-7, 1-4) won a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Village Christian 4, L.A. Baptist 2--Freshman Jason Robitaille (4-0) pitched a four-hitter and Brett Borden homered and doubled as Village Christian (6-3, 1-0) posted its first Alpha League win in two seasons.

Borden’s three-run home run capped a four-run third-inning rally.

Montclair Prep 19, Marshall Fundamental 0--Russell Ortiz homered and singled and drove in five runs during a 14-run sixth for the host Mounties (6-3-1, 2-0) in an Alpha League game.

Joe Eskenazi had two doubles in the inning. Scott Katz, Bryan Stewart and Alan Hecht each singled and walked in the rally. Left-hander Steve Cain threw a two-hitter, struck out nine and walked none.

Highland 8, Cathedral 2--Jeff Tepper and Jim Reel each had two hits for host Highland (4-6) in a nonleague game.

Hueneme 8, Ventura 1--Hueneme’s Marco Grajales struck out five and yielded one hit in 4 2/3 innings of relief to earn the Channel League victory at Hueneme.

Casey Bolen had a triple for Hueneme (5-5-1, 1-2-1).

Santa Clara 6, Santa Paula 1--Junior right-hander Eric Starna threw a three-hitter, struck out four, walked one and allowed no earned runs in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.

Darren Nowak and Eric Rios each had two hits for Santa Clara (6-2, 4-0).

Faith Baptist 8, Buckley 0--Alex Estrada had two hits, drove in two runs and stole four bases in a Delphic League opener at Buckley.

Faith Baptist right-hander Darren Wyre (3-0) allowed one hit over five innings.

SOFTBALL

La Reina 21, Bishop Diego 0--Michelle St. Pierre pitched her second perfect game and fifth no-hitter this season as La Reina (7-3, 2-0) won a Tri-Valley League game. St. Pierre had nine strikeouts.

La Reina had nine hits and benefited from 15 walks and one hit batter.

Thousand Oaks 12, Channel Islands 0--Junior right-hander Carrie Russell threw a perfect game and struck out 10 in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks (6-4, 4-1).

Russell (6-4) threw 67 pitches and had just two three-ball counts.

Camarillo 1, Agoura 0--Christi Moore pitched a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and the host Scorpions (9-3, 4-2) scored an unearned run in the seventh inning to win the Marmonte League game.

Simi Valley 5, Newbury Park 0--Sara Griffin pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts as host Simi Valley (11-1, 6-0) won a Marmonte League game.

Saugus 4, Palmdale 0--Kerry Coudry pitched a one-hitter and struck out eight as host Saugus (14-1, 1-0) won a Golden League game.

Canyon 2, Burroughs Ridgecrest 0--Marianne Winchester pitched a two-hitter as Canyon (8-3, 1-0) won a Golden League game at home.

Sylmar 12, Grant 0--Ruby Gonzalez (8-3, 3-0) threw a one-hitter, walked one and struck out 14 in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at home.

Van Nuys 9, North Hollywood 4--North Hollywood’s Polly Rector threw a two-hitter and gave up four earned runs in six innings, but eight walks and seven errors helped Van Nuys (3-4, 1-2) win a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at home. Mona Sahni pitched a six-hitter for Van Nuys.
