Harbor Is Defeated by Cypress, 7-6

Reliever Rick Orr pitched out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the top of the ninth inning as the Cypress College baseball team beat Harbor, 7-6, in a nonconferece game Thursday at Cypress.

The Seahawks, ranked third in the state, had scored twice in the ninth on a single by Mark Lewis and on pinch-hitter Steve Sell’s bases-loaded walk. But Orr struck out Dwon Knighton and Kris Radcliffe and got Rolando Avila to ground out to earn his fourth save.

Eric Gonzalez’s two-run, pinch-hit sixth-inning single cut Harbor’s deficit to 5-4, but Cypress scored once in the seventh and in the eighth on Tony Martinez’s solo homer.

Tristan Paul was three for four and scored twice for the Seahawks (24-8).

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team will close out the first half of its California Collegiate Athletic Assn. schedule when it plays Cal State Los Angeles today and Saturday.

CS Los Angeles won the opener, 10-0, on Thursday. The teams will play at 7:30 tonight at Cal State L.A. and at 1 p.m. Saturday at Toro Field.

Dominguez Hills (16-14-1, 7-6 in the CCAA) is in third place in the league. Cal State L.A. (13-19, 6-8) is fourth.

Cal State L.A. played well last week, taking two of three conference games from Cal Poly Pomona. Dominguez Hills lost two of three games to conference-leading UC Riverside.

Dominguez Hills, which is tied for 10th with North Alabama in the Division II rankings, has been led by its pitching. The staff has an earned-run average of 3.77. The leader is junior Tom Ball, who is 7-2 with a 1.96 ERA.

Sophomore reliever Juan Soriano has an 0.69 ERA and two saves in 15 appearances, and senior starter Mark Tranberg is 4-2 with a 4.09 ERA.

Senior outfielder Ernie Soto is batting .351, and junior catcher Shawn Wickoff is batting .337. As a team, the Toros are batting .277.

The Marymount College Athletic Boosters will sponsor the second annual Marymount Golf Classic at 12:30 p.m. May 8 at Los Verdes Golf Course, 7000 W. Los Verdes Drive, Rancho Palos Verdes.

The cost is $120, which includes green fees, cart rental, lunch and an awards banquet. The cost is $25 for the banquet only.

Proceeds will go toward the school’s athletic program.

The California Grand Prix Cycling Series is under way at the Olympic Velodrome at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The series, which features top professionals and Olympic prospects from around the world, will be held at 6 p.m. Saturdays through June 13 except for April 18 and May 23.

The cost is $6.50 for reserved seats and $5 for general admission.

A baseball camp for youths ages 9 to 14 will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and April 18 and from 1 to 4:30 p.m. April 19 at Clark Stadium, 861 Valley Drive, Hermosa Beach.

Among the coaches expected to serve as instructors is former major leaguer Jim Campanis.

There is no charge.

Studio West Gymnastics in Rolling Hills Estates has two competitors entered in the five-state U.S. Gymnastics Federation Western Regional for youths ages 10 to 12 on Saturday and Sunday in San Jose.

The participants are Chris Thompson of Rolling Hills Estates and Dale Mulch of Carson, both 11. At the state championship in March, Thompson placed first in the all-around competition and Mulch finished 10th.

The Playa del Rey-based Hurricanes Soccer Club, a youth program for boys and girls ages 9 to 18, will hold tryouts for its 1992-93 season from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 25-26 at Manhattan Village Field, 1212 Park View Ave., Manhattan Beach.
