HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Efficient Tostado Leads Hueneme to 2-0 Victory

Junior left-hander Juan Tostado of Hueneme High needed only 80 pitches to defeat Arroyo Grande, 2-0, Friday in a championship semifinal of the San Luis Obispo baseball tournament.

Tostado hurled a three-hitter, striking out six.

A run-scoring single by Juan Ponce in the first inning provided Hueneme (8-6-1) with the only run it would need.

Mike Ortega singled to drive in another run in the fifth.

Hueneme’s Casey Bolen stole two bases to raise his tournament total to five, tying a tournament record.

Arroyo Grande fell to 11-2, with both losses coming against Hueneme.

In other baseball games:

Glendale 3, Crescenta Valley 1--Run-scoring singles by David Nolan and Keith McCulloch in the sixth inning snapped a 1-1 tie in a Pacific League game.

Senior right-handers Jason Greenberg of Glendale (6-6, 3-4 in league play) and Josh Canale of Crescenta Valley (1-4-1 in league play) each pitched a complete game.

Greenberg (3-3) pitched a two-hitter with four strikeouts; Canale scattered seven hits.

Kennedy 9, East Salt Lake City (Utah) 5--Kennedy (11-4) capitalized on errors in a seven-run third inning and won a second-round game of the Las Vegas tournament.

Joe Bernas reached first on an error, John Davis was walked and Jeff Tagliaferri hit a triple to drive in Bernas and Davis. Tagliaferri then came home on a passed ball. Billy Ramirez singled, Rick Nadeau was walked and John Toven reached base on a fielder’s choice to load the bases.

Another error allowed David Bourne to reach first and Ramirez to score.

Darrin McCall followed with a single to drive in Nadeau and Toven. Bernas hit a single to drive in Bourne.

Kennedy added two runs in the fifth. After Ramirez was walked, Jason Makahon was hit by a pitch and Ramirez went to third on a wild pitch. Toven then singled to drive in Ramirez and Makahon.

Oxnard 5, San Marcos 4--Mike Mendoza’s sacrifice fly knocked in Chris Carrillo with the tiebreaking run in the fifth, lifting the host Yellowjackets (3-10-1, 2-3-1) to a Channel League win.

San Marcos (4-2 in league play) came into the game tied for first place with Buena in the league race, but Oxnard took a 4-1 lead in the first on RBI singles by Mondo Carrillo and Chuck Harrington and a pair of errors.

Carrillo (3-3) gave up solo runs in the first and fifth and two runs in the third, but he blanked the Royals over the last two innings. Carrillo scattered seven hits and two walks, striking out seven. He also went two for three and scored a run.

Providence 23, Oakwood 2--Oakwood committed 15 errors and was overwhelmed by Providence in a Liberty League game at Oakwood.

Providence’s Ryan Allen had a single, double and a triple, three runs batted in and two stolen bases.

Hagop Yaglian went four for four, including a double, and pitcher Robert Mena had 16 strikeouts and gave up two hits and two unearned runs for Providence.
