PREP ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Loses in Volleyball

Derek Slingsby had 15 kills to help Corona del Mar upset Newport Harbor, ranked third in Southern Section 4-A and No. 1 in Orange County, in a Sea View League boys’ volleyball match Friday at at Corona del Mar.

Newport Harbor (11-1, 5-1) was undefeated in league before Friday’s match. After dropping the first two games, 15-9, 15-7, Newport Harbor came back in the third game, 15-7.

Kelly Hanes served for the victory, making Newport Harbor hit the ball long as Corona del Mar (6-5, 4-2) won the game, 15-7. Newport Harbor’s Justin McIntee had 17 kills.

“We served tough to take Newport Harbor out of their passing game and played excellent defense,” first-year Corona del Mar Coach Joey Fuschetti said. “This was great because this was a great game mentally for the team, showing they could play tough against a very good team. We have a very young, inexperienced team that is just getting better.”

In Empire League boys’ volleyball:

Los Alamitos 3, El Dorado 0-- Darrin Jorgensen had 14 kills for the host Griffins (8-3, 3-2), 15-6, 15-11, 15-6 winners.

In Pacific Coast League volleyball:

Laguna Beach 3, Estancia 0--Eric Fegraus had 22 kills, as the Artists swept, 15-13, 15-7, 15-4. Chris Seale had 14 kills for Laguna Beach (10-2, 6-0).

In Garden Grove League boys’ volleyball:

Pacifica 3, La Quinta 0--Jim Green had 16 kills and Mike Shoemaker had 42 assists for host Pacifica (7-7, 5-5), which won, 15-9, 15-12, 15-13.

Rancho Alamitos 3, Kennedy 1--Teofil Tifrea had 23 kills and 13 blocks. Teammate Han Lee had 35 assists and Jay Anderson had 13 blocks for Rancho Alamitos (6-8, 5-5). Kennedy is 4-6.

In Empire League boys’ volleyball:

Esperanza 3, Foothill 0--Paul Nihipali had 22 kills and Chris Hillman had 11 for visiting Esperanza (9-2, 5-0), which won 15-10, 15-4, 15-8.

In South Coast League volleyball:

Irvine 3, El Toro 0--Greg Wakeham and Brady Hamilton each had 14 kills and Jason Mickartz had 56 assists for visiting Irvine (12-0, 6-0), which won 15-12, 15-7, 15-8.

Capistrano Valley 3, Mission Viejo 0--Aaron Garcia had 11 kills and Eric Seiffert had seven kills and four blocks as Capistrano Valley (10-2, 5-1) rolled to a 15-13, 15-5, 15-7 victory.

In Sunset League boys’ volleyball:

Edison 3, Marina 0--Adam Hall had 14 kills and Donato Pilla had 10 for host Edison (7-3, 7-1), which won 15-7, 15-3, 15-6.

In boys’ nonleague swimming:

Mater Dei 102, Brea-Olinda 66--In the 50 freestyle, Phil Meyer swam a school-record 22.53 on the opening leg of the 200 freestyle relay.

In girls’ nonleague swimming:

Mater Dei 110, Brea-Olinda 60--Junior Katie Ward set a school record in the 50 freestyle, winning the race in 25.57.

In Arrowhead League softball:

Calvary Chapel 10, Southern California Christian 0--Kim Schroy pitched a no-hitter, striking out 10 and walking three for the Eagles (7-6, 4-0).

In Sea View League softball:

Woodbridge 1, University 0--Alison Ward (12-1) pitched a five-hitter with three strikeouts for host Woodbridge (20-3, 4-0). Deanna Black singled, went to second on a sacrifice, and scored on an error in the fifth inning.

In the South Coast League softball:

El Toro 2, San Clemente 0--Jodi Smith pitched a four-hitter for visiting El Toro (14-7-1, 4-0). Jaime Smith tripled in the second and scored and singled in a run in the fifth for El Toro.

Capistrano Valley 6, Irvine 2--Heather Still had two hits and drove in two runs for Capistrano Valley (7-8-2, 2-2).
