Several high schools and colleges in the South Bay have canceled or postponed athletic events because of continued violence in Los Angeles.

Westchester High canceled all of its events through today, including Thursday’s scheduled baseball game at Palisades.

“Everything has been put off until this thing blows over,” said Errol Morigaki, the Westchester boys’ volleyball coach.

Banning Athletic Director John Newton said his school canceled a girls’ softball game against Carson and a tennis match against San Pedro on Thursday. Today’s scheduled Southern Pacific Conference track prelims at Jackie Robinson Stadium, near Dorsey, were also canceled. Dorsey was among several schools in South-Central Los Angeles that were closed.

Inglewood schools were also closed, forcing Inglewood and Morningside to cancel or postpone all events Thursday and today. The closures caused Inglewood to forfeit a Bay League track meet Thursday against Hawthorne and postpone a league baseball game today against Peninsula.

Morningside officials could not be reached, but Beverly Hills reported that its scheduled baseball game today against Morningside would most likely not be played.

“We haven’t heard anything, but I’m assuming we will not play,” Beverly Hills baseball Coach Bill Erickson said.

Peninsula co-Athletic Director John Barr said his school would not play any events away from home until the violence is under control. Among the canceled events was a freshman baseball game between Peninsula and Bishop Montgomery on Thursday night at Torrance Park.

“Any activity (away from Peninsula High) will be postponed,” Barr said. “Quite possibly, we just won’t play them.”

El Segundo Athletic Director John Stevenson said that today’s scheduled baseball game at Harvard-Westlake might be canceled. Stevenson, who is El Segundo’s baseball coach, also said Thousand Oaks canceled a doubleheader scheduled to be played Saturday in El Segundo.

Torrance high schools will be closed today, forcing the cancellation or postponement of all athletic events.

Harbor College postponed a home baseball game Thursday against East Los Angeles, and Harbor officials were unsure whether today’s scheduled game at East L.A. would be played.

Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson was closed, forcing the cancellation of a women’s softball game Thursday against Loyola Marymount.

Other events scheduled for today and next week also might be postponed or canceled.
