PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Santa Margarita Upsets Mater Dei

Joey Farris had a two-run home run to break a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning as Santa Margarita upset top-ranked Mater Dei, 5-3, in an Angelus League baseball game Wednesday at Santa Margarita.

With two outs in the sixth, James McGraph doubled before Farris’ home run. McGraph had two doubles and a single, scored two runs and drove in two for Santa Margarita (12-6, 8-4 in league).

McGraph (5-1) was also the winning pitcher. He allowed six hits and struck out nine.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 3, Capistrano Valley 2--Eric Sorensen of Mission Viejo pitched a seven-hitter as the host Diablos (12-9, 5-7) upset the second-ranked Cougars (18-4, 10-2).

Sorensen (3-0) had five strikeouts, gave up seven hits and two walks. Ethan Wyckoff (5-2) had six strikeouts, allowed two hits and walked one for Capistrano Valley.

Neal Caldwell’s RBI single in the third and Eric Fielding’s 14th and 15th stolen bases of the season highlighted the victory for Mission Viejo. Scott Patton had a home run for Capistrano Valley.

El Toro 11, Dana Hills 4--Mike Lutterloh was three for four, scored twice and drove in two runs, and Jason Bailey was two for three and drove in three runs for the visiting Chargers (10-10, 7-5). Dana Hills is 10-13, 5-7.

Irvine 6, San Clemente 3--Chad Baker went four for four with three runs and a stolen base for visiting Irvine (14-9, 7-5). Sophomore Tommy Louie pitched a four-hitter and was two for three with two RBIs.

In the Empire League:

Katella 8, Cypress 7--Cypress scored four runs in the second to take a 5-3 lead, but Katella’s Kyle Evans hit a grand slam in the second to put the Knights ahead, 7-5, at Boysen Park in Anaheim.

Evans was two for four with five RBIs, and the home run was his eighth of the season. Ryan Irving had an RBI triple in the fifth for the Knights, who have won eight in a row. Katella is 14-8, 9-3, and Cypress is 7-5 in league.

El Dorado 12, Los Alamitos 2--Brian Loyd, John Simonsen, and John Street hit home runs for host El Dorado (17-5, 10-2). The Golden Hawks scored three runs in the first and five in the second to take an 8-0 lead. Shawn Holcomb pitched five innings for the victory.

Esperanza 4, Loara 3--Ruiz Pancho drove in two runs with a fifth-inning double for the host Aztecs (5-7, 8-13).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 4, Rancho Alamitos 3 (12)--Amador Martinez’s single drove in Jose Trejo with none out in the top of the 12th for the Aztecs (14-7-1, 7-4).

Garden Grove 4, Los Amigos 0--Brandon Holton (5-2) pitched a four-hitter, striking out 14, and Jay Moore was three for three, driving in two runs and scoring twice for the Argonauts (12-7, 8-3).

Pacifica 10, Santiago 0--Josh Dean (4-4) pitched a seven-hitter and Jeff Depippo was three for three, driving in three runs and scoring twice for the host Mariners (13-10, 6-5).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 9, Magnolia 2--Matt Selinske drove in four runs and Bryan Noyes (7-1) pitched a four-hitter for the visiting Wildcats (16-5-1, 11-1). Jason Corder had a double and triple and scored both of Magnolia’s runs.

Savanna 3, Anaheim 1--Matt Crockwell’s double drove in John Cho, and Crockwell scored on David Rosales’ groundout in the top of the seventh for the Rebels (9-12, 7-5) at Glover Stadium.

Valencia 12, Western 5--Jason Secoda had a home run in the second inning as host Valencia scored six runs to take an 8-3 lead.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 7, Century 0--Brett Nista (5-1) pitched a one-hitter, striking out seven for the visiting Hawks (14-8, 8-3). Tom Reimers had Century’s only hit, a two-out single in the first. Ron DeVito had a two-run double during Laguna Hills’ three-run first inning.

In the Sea View League:

Saddleback 6, Newport Harbor 3--Luis Estrella had a two-run single during a three-run second inning, and James Garcia drove in two runs with a third-inning double for the visiting Roadrunners (16-6, 9-3).

Erasmo Ramirez induced Brandon Coluccio to hit a game-ending line drive to second baseman James Fernandez with runners on second and third to pick up his third save. Estrella (5-4) struck out 12 during his six innings.

Tustin 14, Corona del Mar 0--Tom Cerosuolo (7-2) pitched a five-hitter, striking out 13 for the visiting Tillers (15-6, 11-1).

Fountain Valley 5, Santa Ana 0--Ara Petrosian (5-1) pitched four shutout innings for visiting Fountain Valley (14-10, 6-3).
