Oceanside High School boys’ basketball Coach Don Montamble has resigned for the second time in three years, citing a need to spend time with his family.

Montamble and his wife, Denise, are expecting their first child.

Montamble guided Oceanside to its last San Diego Section title in 1987, his first season, but resigned after the 1988-89 season to devote time to his new marriage. After a year’s absence, he was encouraged by his wife to replace departing Coach Steve Kinder. In the past two years under Montamble, Oceanside went 18-31, including 11-13 this year.

Pat Kimbrel, Oceanside’s athletic director, said Montamble handed in his resignation April 28, but the school did not officially accept it until May 1.

“That leaves a pretty big hole to fill,” Kimbrel said. “It’s going to be real difficult to replace Don. He’s a gifted basketball coach and a good educator, and the whole program was highly regarded in the Avocado League and in the county. He has such a commitment to excellence, there aren’t a whole lot of guys out there like that.”

Kimbrel said Thursday the position would not be advertised until next week and that, as far as he knew, it was being offered as a coaching position only. However, he admitted there has been some interest expressed by on-campus instructors about the vacancy.
