SOUTHERN SECTION PREP PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Nguyens Lead Estancia Into Badminton Final

Chau Nguyen won both his boys’ singles matches and Doan Nguyen won both her girls’ doubles matches as Estancia defeated Diamond Bar, 12-7, in a Southern Section Division 4-A badminton semifinal playoff match Thursday at Diamond Bar.

The victory was the Eagles’ (19-0) 39th consecutive.

In 3-A boys’ tennis:

Esperanza 10, Palm Desert 8--Mike Burgess swept at No. 2 singles for Esperanza (20-0), defeating Palm Desert’s No. 1 player, Dave Evans, 7-5, to clinch the match at Palm Desert.

Laguna Beach 9, Riverside Poly 9 (Laguna Beach wins on games, 85-69)--The Artists (15-7) won six of nine singles sets and advanced to play Sunny Hills in the quarterfinals.

Sunny Hills 14, Temple City 4--The doubles teams of Hiren Bhavsar and Joey Springer and Shawn Harris and Jeff Hartl swept their doubles sets for visiting Sunny Hills (18-3), the defending 3-A champion.

Trabuco Hills 15, Crescenta Valley 3--Mads Nyholm-Larsen and Hannes Ley swept in singles for the host Mustangs (19-3), who will play No. 1 San Marino (19-4) Tuesday.

In Division 2-A:

Valencia 10, Alhambra Keppel 8--Roger Okamoto and the doubles team of Hiten Patel and Huey Dang each won all three of their sets for the host Tigers (18-2).
