LOCAL NOTES : Fountain Valley Girls’ Soccer Team in Regional Final

The Fountain Valley Spirit reached the final of the Western Regional of the National Cup girls’ soccer tournament by beating Arizona in a semifinal match Tuesday in Golden, Colo.

The match was tied, 1-1, at the end of regulation, and 2-2, after the two overtime periods. Fountain Valley won on penalty kicks, 4-2.

Arizona took a 2-1 lead early in the first 15-minute overtime period, but Fountain Valley’s Rhonda Partida scored with 1:30 left in the first overtime to tie the score, 2-2.

Fountain Valley plays Northern California today for the title. The winner advances to the national championships July 25-28 in Virginia.

Eunice Choi, a senior-to-be at Laguna Hills High, shot a five-over 77 to tie for second place in the girls’ 13-18 division after one round of the American Junior Golf Assn.’s Nabisco Mission Hills Desert tournament at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.

Choi was tied with three others, two strokes behind leader Emily Klein of Studio City. Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza shot a 78. The tournament continues through Thursday.

Tiger Woods of Cypress is tied for second, a shot back in the boys’ division after his first-round 72. Gilberto Morales of Venezuela is the leader.

Al Howie and Helmut Schieke tied for first in the fourth stage of the 64-day Runner’s World Trans America Footrace Tuesday.

Howie and Schieke ran the 51.75-mile stage from Barstow to Ludlow, Calif., in 8 hours 2 minutes 30 seconds. Temperatures were in the 100s most of the day.

Howie, of Scotland, holds the overall lead after 186.7 miles at 28:25:15. Schieke is 38 seconds behind, followed by Tom Rogozinski of Hagerstown, Md. (1:30:45 back), James (Echo) Edmonson of Los Angeles (1:57:57), and David Warady of Huntington Beach (2:51:50).
