SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Newbury Oaks American Legion baseball team rolled to its 29th consecutive victory Sunday by defeating Sacramento, 14-2, in the third round of the state tournament.

The game was called after seven innings because of a 10-run rule.

Newbury Oaks collected 15 hits, including four by shortstop David Lamb. Lamb, who is batting .432 for the season, had three doubles, a single and five runs batted in.

Lamb is 18 for 29 (.631) in the postseason, including six for 10 at the state tournament.

Newbury Oaks (29-1), the Area 6 champion, will play the winner of Sunday’s game between Merced and Cupertino at noon today. The winner of that game will play for the state title on Tuesday.

Newbury Oaks scored in five of its seven at-bats, and Lamb had a hand in four of the five. Lamb doubled to drive in a run in the first inning and had a bunt single to set up a run in the second. Lamb added a run-scoring double in the fifth and a three-run double in the sixth to highlight a six-run inning.

Left-hander Adam West (10-1) allowed only one run in 5 2/3 innings to earn the win. Jason Patterson pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.

The shortened game should benefit Newbury Oaks, since pitchers are allowed to throw only 12 innings in a 72-hour period, according to American Legion rules.

Newbury Oaks Manager Chuck Fick said left-hander Tighe Curran, originally scheduled to start Sunday, will start today.
