SHUFFLING THE DECK: High school play starts Sept. 10, and league realignment has created interesting situations. Two firsts: The three Irvine schools--Irvine, University and Woodbridge--are in the same league, the expanded Sea View. And three Catholic schools found homes in county public leagues--Mater Dei (South Coast), Servite (Sunset) and Santa Margarita (Sea View). . . . Mater Dei’s entrance into the always powerful South Coast is expected to have the biggest impact.

Mike DiGiovanna

Mike DiGiovanna has been covering Major League Baseball for the Los Angeles Times since 1995 and spent 19 years as the Angels beat writer and two seasons on the Dodgers. He won Associated Press Sports Editors awards for game-story writing in 2001, feature-story writing in 2017 and breaking news in 2019. A native of East Lyme, Conn., and a graduate of Cal State Fullerton, he began writing for The Times in 1981.

Chris Foster

Chris Foster is a former sports writer for the Los Angeles Times who covered UCLA football and basketball, USC basketball, the Kings and the Ducks. He grew up in San Clemente, arriving long before Richard Nixon came to town. As a teen, he surfed, played football and basketball, and fell in love with sports journalism. Foster died Dec. 13, 2023.
