South Torrance Overpowers Mary Star, 16-0

South Torrance High used a balanced attack to defeat Mary Star, 16-0, in a nonleague football game Saturday night at Daniels Field in San Pedro.

Tailback Kapono Tumale rushed for 144 yards and quarterback Mike Rosato completed 11 of 23 attempts for 139 yards. Receiver Eric Morton caught six passes, including one for a touchdown.

South kicker Steve Finley had second-half field goals of 36, 28 and 30 yards.

The Spartans took the lead late in the first half after taking possession of the ball near midfield.

With four minutes remaining, Rosato passed 16 yards to Morton. Fullback Travis Park then carried to the 22.

Morton, who finished with 85 yards receiving, broke loose on the next play and grabbed Rosato’s pass in the corner of the end zone for the touchdown. Finley added the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

In control throughout, South managed 338 total yards and held Mary Star to 87. The Spartans shut down the Mary Star running game, limiting the Stars to 63 yards, 45 of which came from quarterback Erik Adrid on a broken play.

Adrid was three of 10 passing for 23 yards and also gained a team-high 54 yards rushing. Vince DiLeva added 16 yards.

South dominated the first half statistically, grinding out 142 total yards. The Stars gained only 15 and did not get a first down.

Mary Star appeared set on the game’s first play when cornerback Jason Kusar intercepted Rosato and returned the ball to the South four-yard line.

But on fourth down from the one, kicker Sal Groppo’s 20-yard attempt sailed wide to the left.

Chadwick 27, Borrego Springs 0--Running back Scooter Atkins rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Joe Giaconi passed for one TD and ran for another to lead Chadwick to a nonleague eight-man football victory.

Atkins scored on a six-yard run and Giaconi ran four yards for a touchdown in the first quarter to give Chadwick a 14-0 lead. The Dolphins’ other TDs came in the fourth quarter on a 26-yard run by Atkins and a 15-yard pass from Giaconi to wide receiver Justin Sterling.

Giaconi completed eight of 19 passes, with no interceptions, for 79 yards. Sterling finished with four catches for 43 yards.
