DIGEST : Watts, Young to Lead Drive for Valley Track

Olympic gold medalists Quincy Watts and Kevin Young each will donate $1,000 to kick off a drive to raise funds to build an all-weather track in the West San Fernando Valley.

A site for the track has not been determined.

The announcement was made Thursday at the Warner Center Club in Woodland Hills at a ceremony to honor Watts, a former Taft High and USC standout.

Watts, 22, won the 400 meters in 43.50 seconds and ran the second leg for the world-record-setting 1,600 relay team (2:55.78) in Barcelona.

Watts also has established a fund in his name that will benefit several charities, athletic and academic programs in the Los Angeles area.

Young, 26, a UCLA graduate and a Reseda resident, ran a world-record 46.78 to win the 400 intermediate hurdles at the Games.

Glendale College’s shutout of Citrus in Saturday’s opener vaulted the Vaqueros to 10th in this week’s Southland junior college football poll. Moorpark, which opens on the road against College of the Desert on Saturday, is rated ninth. Pierce (1-0) and Antelope Valley (0-0-1) were among other teams receiving votes.

Quarterback Cesar Parra of Pierce College has been named Western State Conference offensive player of the week, and linebacker Kevin Hurley of Glendale has been named co-defensive player of the week.

Parra, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound sophomore from Van Nuys High, completed six of 13 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a touchdown in a 38-24 opening win over East Los Angeles.

Hurley, a 5-11, 205-pound sophomore from St. Francis High, had nine unassisted tackles and two sacks in a 31-0 win over Citrus.

Registration for the American Roundball Corp. fall basketball league for boys and girls in grades 7-12 is scheduled for Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at North Hollywood High. In addition, boys in those grades can register Sunday at Camarillo High from 3 to 5 p.m.

The High Line Momentum boys’ volleyball club is holding tryouts this weekend. Sessions will take place Saturday at Chaminade High from 9:45 a.m. to noon in the 18-and-under category and from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. for 16-and-under and 14-and-under groups. Tryouts for all age groups also will be held at Royal High on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Area cyclists Thurlow Rogers of Van Nuys and John Wordin of West Hills each turned in impressive performances in a pair of Southland events last weekend. On Saturday, Rogers finished second in the 30-mile San Bernardino Criterium. Wordin, riding for the Velo Avanti-Mrs. Gooch’s Racing Team, placed 12th.

In the Bakersfield Ride-Share Criterium on Sunday, Wordin placed second and Rogers finished fifth. Wordin was edged in a two-man breakaway when his foot slipped off the pedal.

Shagarro Lattin, a former Cal State Northridge and Valley College basketball player, has been hired as a women’s basketball assistant at Antelope Valley College.

Angel Abreu of Burbank was upset by Chris Bennett of Philadelphia, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, in a second-round match of the U.S. Tennis Assn. men’s 35-and-over Grass Court Championship at Southampton, N.Y. Abreu was seeded ninth.

R.J. Kors, a former El Camino Real High standout, has been signed as a free agent by the New York Jets. Kors is a safety.

After finishing fourth in last weekend’s California Classic girls’ volleyball tournament at Westlake, Thousand Oaks has moved up to seventh in the latest CIF/Reebox state volleyball coaches poll. The Lancers were ranked 10th in the preseason poll and are the only area team in the top 20.
