PREP FOOTBALL : El Segundo Runs All Over Laguna Beach

Share

Joey Bolder rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns to lead El Segundo High to a 34-31 victory over host Laguna Beach Friday night.

Bolder scored on runs of 33, one, and 17 yards, breaking tackles on each scoring run. His performance overshadowed an outstanding effort by Artist quarterback Patrick Wood. Wood threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns, helping Laguna Beach rally from deficits three times.

Wood completed 14 of 29 passes, but had four passes dropped and did an excellent job of scrambling away from constant pressure.

Wood was especially successful early in the game. After El Segundo took a 7-0 lead, Wood completed passes of 15, 26 and 40 yards, the latter two to Lute Matjas, as the Artists tied the score, 7-7. Matjas caught five passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns.

The Artists were in the game until a fake punt play failed to gain a first down with 4:10 left in the game, giving El Segundo excellent field position and allowing the Eagles to take a 34-23 lead with 1:22 remaining.

Wood completed four of five passes on the Artist’s final drive, finally connecting with Bill Marlow for a touchdown with two seconds remaining.

Laguna Beach recovered the ensuing onside kick as time ran out.
