Less shoot, more run.

Throwing a wrinkle into its explosive run-and-shoot offense, Hart High relied heavily on its running game to post a 21-6 nonleague win Friday night over Thousand Oaks at College of the Canyons.

Tailback Deriek Charles carried 16 times for a career-high 151 yards and Davis Delmatoff--showing his versatility after a 397-yard, six-touchdown passing performance last week in his first start at quarterback--ran for 130 yards in 17 carries.

Delmatoff ran for one touchdown and passed 24 yards to Jared Halverson for another. He completed eight of 15 passes for 156 yards and had one interception.

“(Thousand Oaks) had to be surprised at what we did,” said Charles, who scored on a 30-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

“We had to do it because they were giving it to us. We got tired of people telling us we’re only a passing team. We can do both.”

This is the first time in nine tries that Hart (2-0) has defeated Thousand Oaks (0-1-1).

Hart’s defense played a strong game, limiting Thousand Oaks to a four-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Trevor Thompson to Matt Elam in the fourth quarter.

Hart looked sharp opening the game, scoring touchdowns on two of its first three possessions.

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Indians needed only three plays to take a 7-0 lead on a 57-yard touchdown run by Delmatoff and a point-after by Tim Cronk.

After a fumble by Lancer tailback Quincy Jacobs at the Thousand Oaks 40-yard line in the second quarter, Hart scored its second touchdown on Delmatoff’s pass to Halverson. Cronk’s second PAT put the Indians ahead, 14-0, at halftime.

Thompson completed three of 13 for 50 yards and threw two interceptions in the first half. He also had a 26-yard touchdown run wiped out by an illegal-procedure penalty. He completed eight of 19 for 78 yards in the game.

Hart also stopped Thousand Oaks’ productive backfield of Jacobs and Fred Polito, limiting the duo to 27 and 36 yards, respectively, in the first half. Polito, who led the Lancers in rushing, finished with 60 yards in 13 carries.
