SPORTSCOPE : Loyola Volleyball Team Plays at San Diego State

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team, which has lost four of five matches, will travel to San Diego State tonight for a 7:30 match.

San Diego State (11-2) is coming off a victory over NCAA Division II power UC Riverside on Wednesday.

The Lions (6-5) have been led by junior outside hitter Deanna Doolittle, who needs four digs to surpass Leslie Wohlford as the school’s career leader.

Surfer Hagan Kelley of Redondo Beach recently completed an outstanding season by making it through the two rounds of an American Surfing Professionals tournament in Cocoa Beach, Fla.

In August, Kelley, 13, finished second in the 12-and-under division at the U.S. Amateur Surfing Championships in Hawaii.

Last season he earned the overall title at the Western Regional Surfing Championships.

Kelley, who was born on the Hawaiian Island of Maui and raised on Oahu’s North Shore, has been selected to the NSSA national team for 1992-93 based on last season’s performance.

After losing to Cal State San Bernardino, 3-2, Wednesday, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team will play host to California Collegiate Athletic Assn. opponent Cal State Los Angeles at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Dominguez Hills is 4-5 and 1-2 in the CCAA; Cal State L.A. is 5-1-1 and 0-1-1.

Cal State L.A., which is competing in the CCAA for the first time in 10 years, is ranked sixth in Division II and one of the favorites to win the conference. The Golden Eagles tied Cal State Bakersfield, 2-2, Wednesday.

Dominguez Hills has been led by senior forward Gerardo Yepez and junior forward Masahiro Fujiki. Yepez leads the team with seven points and Fujiki has five.

The Loyola Marymount men’s soccer team will play host to Sacramento State in a nonconference match at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Loyola (2-4-2) lost its West Coast Conference opener to San Francisco, 5-0, on Monday.

Forward Dannel Christian, a junior from Hilo, Hawaii, leads the Lions in scoring with eight points.

Top prep boys and girls from throughout the Western U.S. are expected to participate in the Blue Chip Basketball Shootout Oct. 3-4 at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Participants will play a minimum of two games each day.

Registration for the South Bay Girls Basketball Club for youths ages 8 to 13 will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 3 at Peninsula High.

Girls 12 and 13 will register at 1 p.m. and 11 and younger will register at 3 p.m.

Clinics will be held on Saturdays and Sundays, and traveling teams will be formed in March.

The cost is $45 for the first month and $40 for each month thereafter.

Former World Boxing Assn. junior lightweight and World Boxing Council super-lightweight champion Roger Mayweather will meet Fidel Avendano in a 10-round bout Monday night at the Forum.

In his last bout on Aug. 24, Mayweather (41-7, 26 knockouts) knocked out Pedro de la Cruz in the second round at the Forum.

After losing a 10-round decision to David Sample in February, Avendano (36-2, 23 KOs) has won three consecutive bouts by knockout.

The card begins at 7.
