School: Costa Mesa High

Sport: Football

Position: Running back

Class: Junior

In Costa Mesa’s first two games this season, Tran didn’t score a touchdown and neither did any of his Mustang teammates. Friday, that changed in a big way. Tran scored on touchdown runs of 72, 24 and one yards and Costa Mesa defeated Los Amigos, 36-6, for the Mustangs’ first victory under first-year Coach Myron Miller. Tran carried the ball 28 times for 216 yards, which is 90 yards more than he gained in the first two games combined. It also was the best performance of his career, surpassing the 212 yards he gained against Laguna Beach last season. Miller said Tran has grown accustomed to a new offense that requires him to be more of a power runner. “We knew he was going to be a good runner once he understood how to run in this offense,” Miller said. “He got better as the game went on. The first three or four carries he was looking for the big holes instead of trying to make something happen.”

Other top performers:

* Mike Jacot, who gained 342 yards--the third-best rushing performance in Orange County history--and scored four touchdowns in Southern California Christian’s 36-20 victory over St. John’s.

* Aaron Meschuk, who gained 223 yards and scored two touchdowns in Whittier Christian’s 37-7 victory over Sonora.

* Ryan Wilkinson, a Santa Margarita runner who ran 15 minutes 37 seconds--the fastest time for a county boy at the Laguna Hills Invitational--to win the Division II sophomore race.
