Johnny Macon is nicknamed the Legend by his teammates on the Downey High football team.

The senior quarterback also punts, returns kicks and plays cornerback.

But Macon couldn’t do much Friday night in a 27-7 loss to Compton Dominguez in a San Gabriel Valley League opener at Downey High.

Dominguez running back Tyrone Miles scored three touchdowns and Macon was sacked eight times for a loss of 64 yards.

“With his talent, he is liable to do just about anything,” said Dominguez linebacker Antoine Rhodes of the 6-foot, 185-pound Macon, who is being recruited by USC, UCLA and Oklahoma. “He made some big plays, but our defense practiced in containing him.”

In the second quarter, Rhodes, who had four sacks, blocked Macon’s punt. Donnell Woodbey recovered at the Downey 19-yard line to set up the Dons’ second score.

Two plays later, Miles scrambled in from nine yards and Sean Williams ran in for the two-point conversion to give the Dons a 14-0 lead.

Gregory White, Germel Ford and Zaire Rowens assisted on two sacks each for Dominguez.

Dominguez has shut out two of its four opponents and almost had a third, but Macon completed a 73-yard touchdown pass play in the fourth quarter to Ray Tarver after Dominguez had built a 21-0 lead.

Macon, who has passed for nearly 3,000 yards in his career, completed six of 12 passes for 124 yards. He also had an interception on defense.

But his fumble at the Dominguez two-yard line late in the second quarter halted the Vikings’ only first-half scoring threat.

Dominguez, ninth in The Times’ rankings, improved to 4-0. Downey, ranked No. 13, is 3-1. Last season, Dominguez handed Downey its only league loss and the teams shared the San Gabriel Valley League title.

“Downey is a pretty good team, but Macon is their man,” said Miles, who rushed for 58 yards. “We were able to pressure him. This could be the championship.”

After having a touchdown nullified on the opening kickoff because of a clipping penalty, Dominguez drove 54 yards in eight plays on its next possession. Miles scored on an eight-yard run to go ahead, 6-0, midway through the first quarter.

Downey managed 37 yards offense in the first half and crossed into Dominguez territory twice in the game.

Robert Jenkins rushed for 58 yards and Scott Cloman had 43 for Dominguez. Cloman’s 12-yard run gave the Dons a 21-0 lead early in the fourth quarter.
