Loyola High continued its domination of Antelope Valley with a 28-7 nonleague victory Friday at Glendale High.

Loyola (4-0), the top-ranked team in Southern Section Division I, had no trouble extending its win streak against Antelope Valley to seven in as many years.

Offense once again was Antelope Valley’s downfall. The Antelopes (2-2), who average only 150 yards a game, managed 90 against Loyola--87 of which came in the second half.

“They outmanned us up front,” Antelope Valley Coach Brent Newcomb said. “But I’m real proud of the way our guys played in the second half.”

Loyola, which had amassed 256 yards by halftime, scored 21 points in the first seven minutes of the second quarter to take a 21-0 lead.

After Loyola took a 28-0 lead on a 15-yard bootleg by quarterback Clelio Boccato in the third quarter, Antelope Valley responded with its finest drive of the evening.

Antelope Valley quarterback Bayi Hilton, who completed all six of his second-half passes for 73 yards, hit tight end David Newman on a 17-yard slant for the Antelopes’ only touchdown.

Antelope Valley received help in the first half via Loyola penalties (eight for 88 yards).

The Cubs committed 14 penalties for 135 yards in the game, but they didn’t seem to hurt. The Antelopes failed to produce a first down on their first five possessions.

On Antelope Valley’s sixth possession, back-to-back Loyola penalties opened the series and got the Antelopes to the Loyola 41.

Hilton completed passes of 11 and four yards to get to the 26. Chad Shrout’s subsequent 42-yard field-goal attempt was plenty long but wide left.

Shrout, also the Antelopes’ punter, helped keep the Cubs at bay with a 40-yard average in six punts.

“Yeah, that’s the best part of our game,” Newcomb said. “Our punt game.”
