PREP ROUNDUP : Corona del Mar Wins Volleyball Title in Chicago

Jennifer Stroffe helped Corona del Mar to a 15-10, 15-8 victory over McAuley High School of Chicago in the championship match of the McAuley national girls’ invitational volleyball tournament.

Stroffe was named tournament MVP and Kim Coleman also was selected to the all-tournament team for the Sea Kings, who won five matches to win the title. The Sea Kings did not lose a game in the tournament.

Laguna Beach, ranked second to Corona del Mar in Orange County, was defeated by Mother McAuley, 16-14, 5-15, 16-14, in a quarterfinal match. Rachel Wacholder earned all-tournament honors for the Artists.

In the San Marcos Invitational girls’ volleyball tournament:

Newport Harbor wins--Led by tournament MVP Misty May, Newport Harbor rallied from a 7-3 deficit to defeat Mater Dei, 15-7, in the championship game at UC Santa Barbara. Melissa Schutz also earned first-team all-tournament honors for the Sailors.

In the Orange County Invitational girls’ tennis tournament:

Gomez wins--Mandy Gomez of Rosary won the singles title with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jessica Lurman of Costa Mesa. Teammates Colleen Coady and Bonnie Neri advanced to the finals of doubles competition before falling to Woodbridge’s Anne Marie Risquez and Liz Adcock, 7-6, 6-3.
