Saddleback, Orange County’s No. 2-ranked boys’ cross-country team, plays host to No. 3 Newport Harbor in a Sea View League dual meet at 3 p.m. today at Mason Park in Irvine.
Each team figures to have bigger meets to come, and there’s no sense dwelling on the results of this early-season encounter, Newport Harbor Coach Bim Barry said.
“If we win, then great,” Barry said. “If we don’t, we go on.”
The Sailors, led by seniors Dylan Guggenmos, Sky Peterka and Jared Overton, earned praise from Dave Wilson, coach of top-ranked Katella, after the Dana Hills Invitational last Saturday.
“The team that really scares me is Newport Harbor,” Wilson said.”
Saddleback is led by junior Julio Cordero and sophomore Hector Ochoa.
The Central Park Invitational, which begins at 8 a.m. Saturday in Huntington Beach, is this week’s featured event. It’s also the last tuneup for many teams before the Orange County Championships Oct. 17 at Irvine Park.
