SPORTSCOPE : No. 1 Toros Try to Run Win Streak to 11

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II, will open the second half of California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play with a match against Chapman at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Orange.

Dominguez Hills (10-1) won its 10th consecutive game with a 4-1 nonconference victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Wednesday.

The Toros, who were 3-0 in the first half of conference play, defeated Chapman, 6-0, on Sept. 16 at Dominguez Hills.

Junior forward Teresa Bateman, a transfer from El Camino College, leads the Toros with nine goals and 21 points.

Dominguez Hills has also been paced by senior forward Amy Rubin, who led the team in scoring as a sophomore and junior. Rubin has seven goals and 17 points. Junior goalkeeper Briana O’Dowd has a 0.65 goals-against average.

Dominguez Hills will play Cal State Hayward at 2 p.m. Monday, and at UC Davis at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

After three consecutive nonconference defeats, the Loyola Marymount men’s soccer team will return to West Coast Conference play with a match against 14th-ranked University of San Diego at 1 p.m. Sunday in Westchester.

On Tuesday, the Lions will play host to the Master’s College in a nonconference match at 4 p.m.

Loyola, which lost Monday to Chapman, 4-3, is 2-7-2 and 0-1 in conference play. The Lions have not won a WCC game since the conference shifted to a round-robin format in 1988.

The Lions have been led by junior forward Dannel Christian, who has five goals and 11 points. He had a goal and an assist in the loss to Chapman.

The Loyola water polo team will travel to ninth-ranked UC San Diego for a match at 7 tonight.

Loyola (4-9) lost three games last week in the NorCal tournament at Stanford.

In September, San Diego defeated Loyola, 20-7, in a tournament at Pomona-Pitzer.

The leading scorer for the Lions has been senior Jeff Lee with 28 goals. Corey Puentes has 18 goals.
