Longtime Ojai Prep Soccer Coach to Be Honored

Harry Bamberger, longtime soccer coach at Nordhoff High and Villanova Prep, has retired and will be honored tonight during ceremonies at halftime of the Nordhoff-Bishop Diego football game.

Bamberger, 70, started the Nordhoff boys’ program in 1978 and the girls’ in 1982. The 40-year resident of Ojai has led the girls to seven Southern Section playoff berths in the last eight years.

Bamberger, who also served as a high school soccer referee for 15 years, has coached the Villanova boys’ team for the past 10 years.

Jerry Robinson will replace Bamberger at Villanova; Jayden Morrison will take over at Nordhoff.

The West Coast Fall Men’s Tennis Championships will begin at 10 this morning with main-draw play at Warner Center Club. Defending champion Brian MacPhie of USC is competing along with players from UCLA, Pepperdine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, Arizona State, Kansas and North Carolina.

There will be two rounds of play today. The quarterfinals will start Saturday at 8:30 a.m., the semifinals will begin Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and the finals are scheduled for 2 p.m.

A 45-minute juniors clinic will be conducted Saturday at 12:30 p.m. An exhibition involving women professionals is set for Sunday at 12:45 p.m.

The tournament benefits the Pacific Lodge Boy’s Home.

The 5K Magic Run will be held Sunday at Magic Mountain beginning at 8 a.m. Registration starts at 6:30 a.m. Runners can preregister by calling 805-259-7800, ext. 433.

The race benefits College of the Canyons’ hotel and restaurant management program.

The Marylebone Cricket Club of England will face an all-star team composed of players from various Southland cricket clubs Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Balboa Middle School in Ventura.
