PREP ROUNDUP : Pair Sparks Capistrano Valley to Sweep of El Toro in Girls’ Volleyball
Outside hitters Shelly Smith and Vanessa Schweinsberg had 14 kills each to lead Capistrano Valley to a 15-10, 15-8, 15-10 sweep of El Toro in girls’ volleyball Tuesday night at Capistrano Valley High.
The victory kept Capistrano Valley undefeated in the South Coast League at 3-0. The Cougars won without starter Stephanie Wichmann, who was sidelined by an ankle injury at the start of the second game.
Capistrano Valley controlled the first two games with solid digs, good passing and strong middle play, while El Toro committed a surprising number of unforced errors.
El Toro (3-3, 1-2) came out strong in the third game, taking a 5-2 lead, but then seemed to fall into disarray.
“No one really took control for our team,” El Toro Coach Scott Terry said. “It was just a lot of people doing a lot of different things.”
In other South Coast League play:
Mater Dei 3, Dana Hills 0--Erica Helferich led Mater Dei (5-1, 3-0) with 11 kills and eight digs in its 15-6, 15-3, 15-7 victory over Dana Hills (7-2, 1-2).
In the Garden Grove League:
Kennedy 3, Santiago 2--Host Kennedy (8-1, 6-1) rallied from a two-game deficit to move into sole possession of first place. Lisa Pitt had 16 kills for Kennedy, which won, 12-15, 10-15, 15-7, 16-14, 15-9. Santiago is 5-2 in league.
In the Empire League:
Cypress 3, Katella 1--Heather Lowe had 14 kills and five aces for host Cypress (7-2, 3-0), which won, 15-4, 15-4, 9-15, 15-4.
In the Freeway League:
Sunny Hills 3, Sonora 0--Rachel Hochgesang had 11 kills for visiting Sunny Hills (8-1, 3-0), which won, 15-1, 15-1, 15-4.
Fullerton 3, Troy 1--Nadia Hoerner had 11 kills for host Fullerton (5-6, 2-1), which won, 15-11, 15-6, 15-17, 15-11. Jill Katsis had 14 kills for Troy (8-1, 2-1).
In the Orange League:
Valencia 3, Brea-Olinda 0--Brandy Smerko had 19 kills for Valencia (6-3, 3-0), which won, 15-9, 15-9, 15-10. Angie Hanes and Shannon Vreazeale each had 10 kills for host Brea-Olinda (5-4, 2-1).
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Beach 3, Costa Mesa 0--Megan Garner had seven kills and Rose Kuhn had seven kills and nine aces for visiting Laguna Beach (7-0, 3-0), which won, 15-3, 15-2, 15-3.
Laguna Hills 3, Trabuco Hills 1--Lynn Lovinger had 14 kills for Laguna Hills (2-6, 2-1), which won, 12-15, 16-14, 15-11, 15-13. Betsy Yaap had 12 kills for Trabuco Hills (0-8, 0-3).
In Garden Grove League girls’ tennis:
La Quinta 14, Bolsa Grande 4--Lynn Wu won her singles sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-4, and the doubles team of Khanh Tong and Quynh Oh won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4, for host La Quinta (8-3, 7-0).
In the Olympic League:
Connelly 9, Whittier Christian 9 (Connelly wins on games, 81-80)--Rena Cohen won her singles sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, and the doubles team of Ann Mah and Camille Pinero won, 7-6, 6-4, 6-0, for Connelly (5-3, 2-0). Mah and Pinero have a 24-0 record this season.
In the South Coast League:
Dana Hills 12, Mater Dei 6--Ann-Marie Roseen and Michele Johnson led Dana Hills (9-2, 3-0) to its victory over Mater Dei with a 7-6, 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 1 doubles.
El Toro 11, Capistrano Valley 7--Kate Kunath swept at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, 6-0, for visiting El Toro (7-5, 2-1).
In Century League girls’ cross-country:
El Modena 27, Canyon 28--Even though Kim Nelson (18:53) and Laura Flatauer (19:11) finished first and second for Canyon, El Modena (4-0) edged the host Comanches (3-1). Kristina Dahlberg led El Modena, the defending Southern Section Division II-A champions, finishing third in 19:29.
In nonleague water polo:
Costa Mesa 8, Dana Hills 7 (sudden death)--Sam Grayeli scored his fourth goal with 42 seconds remaining in sudden death for Costa Mesa (12-7). Teammate J.R. Porter had two goals. Alan Herrmann had five goals for Dana Hills.
Long Beach Wilson 15, Villa Park 10--Lenny Malo scored six goals for visiting Villa Park.
