SPORTSCOPE : Loyola Plays Host to 2 League Opponents

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team will be bidding to remain undefeated in West Coast Conference play when it plays host to the University of San Francisco tonight and St. Mary’s on Saturday night. Both matches start at 7:30.

It will be the first conference home matches for the Lions, who are 11-7 and 3-0 in the WCC and trail first-place Santa Clara by half a game. Santa Clara (12-7, 4-0) will visit Gonzaga and Portland, two teams Loyola has already defeated, tonight and Saturday.

San Francisco is 9-6 and 1-3 and St. Mary’s is 5-14 and 1-3.

Loyola defeated San Diego, 17-15, 15-0, 15-3, Saturday and William and Mary in four games Sunday in a nonconference match. The 15-0 win in the second game of the San Diego match was the first time the Lions had shut out an opponent since a 1987 match against Santa Clara.

The Lions, who have won six consecutive conference matches over two seasons, have been led by junior outside hitter Deanna Doolittle. She is among the team leaders in kills, digs and hitting percentage.

Sophomore setter Robin Ortgiesen ranks eighth in the nation with an average of 12.89 assists a game. With 71 assists against William and Mary and 2,196 in her career, she is only 87 away from becoming the school’s all-time assist leader.

After playing to a 3-3 tie in overtime with conference-leading Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team will play host to Cal State San Bernardino in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Dominguez Hills is 5-6-3 and in fourth place in the CCAA at 2-3-3.

San Bernardino is 3-9 and in sixth place in the CCAA at 2-5. The Toros lost to San Bernardino, 3-2, on Sept. 23 in San Bernardino.

The Toros have been led by senior forward Gerardo Yepez, a former El Camino College and Hawthorne High standout. He moved into third place on the school’s career scoring list at 48 points with a goal against Bakersfield.

Yepez is the team’s scoring leader with five goals and 15 points.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team can clinch its second consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Assn. title with a victory over Cal State San Bernardino at 11 a.m. Saturday in Carson.

Dominguez Hills, which saw its 12-game winning streak end in a 2-1 nonconference loss Tuesday to UC Davis, is 12-2 and 4-0 in the CCAA. The Toros are ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II.

Cal Poly Pomona (8-5-1) is in second place in the four-team conference at 1-2-1 and San Bernardino is 1-2. The Coyotes lost to the Toros, 4-1, in a Sept. 23 match at San Bernardino.

Dominguez Hills has been led by junior forward Amy Rubin, who has scored at least a goal or more in a school-record nine consecutive games. Rubin leads the team in scoring with 27 points and forward Teresa Bateman has 25.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s volleyball team will play host to nationally ranked Cal Poly Pomona at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Pomona, ranked No. 12 in the NCAA Division II, is 17-4 and 2-1 in the CCAA; Dominguez Hills is 4-19 and 0-3. Pomona defeated Dominguez Hills in three games Tuesday at Pomona.

Junior middle blocker Evonne Caouette leads the Toros with a .327 hitting percentage and is the school’s all-time leader in blocks.

A three-day mini-camp for boys and girls basketball players in grades one through eight starts tonight at Mira Costa High.

The camp will run from 6 to 9 tonight and Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The cost is $100, which includes a T-shirt.
