Streak-ender: When Capistrano Valley became the first team to beat El Toro in water polo this season, it also ended a two-season, 24-match winning streak, third-longest in Southern Section history.

Only Corona del Mar, which won 41 in a row in 1985-86, and Sunny Hills, which won 29 in 1985, have had longer water polo streaks.

El Toro ended the regular season last year with five consecutive victories and because the Chargers missed the playoffs, the streak continued this season.

The 13-12 loss Saturday in the final of the North Orange County tournament was the Chargers’ fourth match against a ranked team in three days. After all that, El Toro Coach Don Stoll said, his team was exhausted and not overly upset to have the streak ended.

“They took it pretty well because I put it into perspective,” Stoll said. “I told them that they had to go through a major gantlet.”

The Rematch: Capistrano Valley (20-1) and El Toro (19-1), which switched places in the Orange County and Southern Section Division I polls this week--the Cougars are now No. 1, El Toro No. 2--will meet today in a South Coast League match at Saddleback College. The freshman-sophomore match is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
