Jenny Hagen came off the bench to record 17 kills and 11 digs to lead Thousand Oaks High to a seesaw 7-15, 15-8, 15-4, 12-15, 15-5 victory over Agoura in a Marmonte League girls’ volleyball first-place showdown Thursday night at Agoura.

Relying on excellent defense, Thousand Oaks (12-4, 9-1 in league play) piled up season highs with 43 blocks and 73 digs to avenge a four-game loss last month to the Chargers.

Agoura (9-3, 8-2) used strong serving to win the first game, but the Chargers were worn down by the defensive pressure of the Lancers.

Thousand Oaks received 12 blocks each from Jenny Mangels and Carrie Penfield. Mangels also contributed four aces.

The Chargers trailed, 11-4, in game four when standout setter-outside hitter Tracy Heflin sustained a sprained ankle in a collision with middle blocker Diana Weisbrock.

Sparked by strong hitting from outside hitter Jenny Pavley, Agoura came back to win that game, but could not pull out the match.

“We transitioned (from defense to offense) real well and kept the pressure on them,” Thousand Oaks Coach Ron Beick said.

Gretchen Gulbranson had 45 assists, 14 digs and 10 blocks for Thousand Oaks.

Tricia Tuley added 10 kills and nine digs.
