Sunny Hills retained its position at the top of the Freeway League with a 12-15, 15-13, 17-15, 15-7 victory over La Habra Tuesday in a girls’ volleyball match at Sunny Hills High School.

After a three-year drought against La Habra, it was the second time this season the Lancers (12-1, 7-0 in league) have defeated the Highlanders (9-2, 5-2).

Led by Rachel Hochgesang’s 23 kills, Sunny Hills won three consecutive games after losing the first.

The score was tied six times in the first game before La Habra tallied the final three points. In the second game, Sunny Hills rallied from a 12-8 deficit to tie. The score was tied at 13 before two consecutive kills by Hochgesang ended the game.

But the match hinged on the third game, in which La Habra built a 13-0 lead. Sunny Hills rallied tenaciously, scoring six points before the Highlanders reached game point on a spike by Jackie Kelley. The Lancers then staved off six game points before tying the score at 14.

La Habra’s Sandy Kohler and Kameron Schambeck blocked Hochgesang to give the Highlanders a 15-14 lead. But Tegan Catlin served an ace for Sunny Hills, Jennifer Coopman spiked down the line, and La Habra was called for four hits to end the game. The Lancers won the fourth game easily.
