It will be time to get excited about Jim Everett if he has a big day Sunday at Atlanta. . . .

During their last three games against the Rams, the Falcons have held Everett to 29 completions in 83 attempts, 372 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. . . .

A Ram victory would bring their all-time record to 400-341-20. . . .

Only four NFL franchises have won more games--the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, New York Giants and Washington Redskins. . . .

The first Ram victory was 21-3 over the Eagles Sept. 17, 1937, at Philadelphia. It was the second game for the Cleveland Rams, who promptly went on a 12-game losing streak that didn’t end until the next season against Detroit. . . .

The Cleveland Rams were 35-49-2. Since their inception in 1946, the Los Angeles Rams are 364-292-18. . . .

If the Falcons draft Michigan quarterback Elvis Grbac, Elvis will be able to leave tickets for Jerry Glanville at the box office. . . .

There are nine pictures of Mike Ditka on the cover of the Chicago Bear media guide, which is probably being used as a dart board by the Chicago media. . . .

It is a policy of UCLA Coach Terry Donahue to award scholarships to walk-on players who become regulars. The latest recipient is sophomore punter Darren Schager, who is averaging 41.9 yards per kick and has placed 12 of them inside the opponents’ 20-yard line in the last four games. . . .

Only five Bruin seniors started against Arizona State, and only four USC seniors started against Washington State. . . .

Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz on the injury suffered by sophomore tailback Lee Becton in practice last week: “I didn’t think he could run fast enough to pull a hamstring.” . . .

Best local sports event of the weekend might be the women’s volleyball game between No. 1-ranked UCLA and No. 2 Stanford at the Wooden Center Friday at 7 p.m. Tickets are a bargain at $5 for adults and $3 for kids. The Bruins lost the first two games and then swept the next three to defeat Stanford at Palo Alto earlier this season. . . .

Thumbs up to the Clippers for joining forces with ARCO to refurbish 66 basketball courts at 21 inner-city playgrounds, conduct 30 motivational basketball clinics and create a Los Angeles youth basketball tournament. . . .

Breeders’ Cup handicappers would be wise to catch the hour-long preview show on Channel 56 Friday at 8:30 p.m. It will be co-hosted by Jeff Siegel and Mandy McKaughan and include videotapes of many of the European contenders and analysis by Trevor Denman. . . .

Three European-based horses won Cup races last year--Sheikh Albadou in the Sprint, Arazi in the Juvenile and Miss Alleged in the Turf Classic. . . .

Clown Jorge Paez must be taking his shot at the vacant North American Boxing Federation lightweight title against Rafael Ruelas seriously. With the Forum fight still eight days away, Paez has trimmed down to 137 1/2 pounds, only 2 1/2 above the limit. . . .

Oscar De La Hoya has hired Magic Johnson’s agent, Lon Rosen, to handle his marketing campaign. . . .

Michigan, Kansas, Indiana, Duke, Kentucky and Seton Hall are among those teams getting the most preseason NCAA basketball hype. The sleeper in the Pacific 10 Conference, where Arizona is favored again, could be Oregon State. . . .

Shaquille O’Neal is one 310-pound NBA player who is not being told to lose weight. . . .

Having star NHL players participate in the Winter Olympic Games is a bad idea because, unlike the NBA and the Summer Olympics, the competition takes place during the regular-season schedule. . . .

Proof of the deep talent pool on the PGA Tour is that 99 golfers have earned more than $150,000 apiece this year. . . .

Goaltender Kelly Hrudey says this King team is the closest-knit he has ever played for. . . .

The Ottawa Senators win about as often as the Washington Senators used to. . . .

ESPN is proving that hockey does belong there. . . .

Have the Pittsburgh Penguins clinched a playoff berth yet? . . .

The Florida Marlins made a good hire in Gary Carter as TV analyst. He talks as good a game as he caught. . . .

After baseball’s TV contract runs out, .250 hitters and .500 pitchers no longer will be able to demand multimillion dollar free-agent contracts. . . .

The international expertise, goodwill and warmth of Akihiro (Ike) Ikuhara, Peter O’Malley’s longtime assistant who died this week, will be missed at Dodger Stadium.
