NOTEWORTHY

Mark Stump had one interception and two pass deflections for Brethren Christian in its 14-12 victory over Cerritos Valley Christian to tie Whittier Christian for the Olympic League championship. It is the first championship for Brethren Christian since 1982, which was also the last time it won at Valley Christian’s stadium.

Huntington Beach High celebrated 71 years of football by inviting former players to its Sunset League game against Edison. Among the 50 players who attended were John Pierson (Class of ‘68) and his nephew, Paul Hannah (Class of ‘84), who represented two-thirds of a three-generation Oiler family. Pierson’s deceased father, Wes, played on a league championship Oiler team in 1941.
