After Slow Start, No. 9 Sunny Hills Wins With Ease

It took time for their offense to get its act together, but the Sunny Hills Lancers basically followed the script in regaining the Freeway League football title Friday night.

The Lancers (8-1-1, 4-0-1) routed last-place Fullerton, 41-0, at Buena Park to reclaim the crown they held in 1990. But due to a sluggish offense--and inspired defensive play by Fullerton--it took the the ninth-ranked Lancers longer than planned to take care of the Indians (1-9, 0-5).

“It’s kind of frustrating when you know what the offense is capable of,” said Sunny Hills Coach Tim Devaney, whose team led by just two touchdowns late in the third quarter before breaking the game open. “But our defense played with intensity. It’s a good way to go into the playoffs.”

Statistically, the Lancers were led by reserve Bryce Pippert, who rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns in just two carries when the game was out of reach. But when it was still close, the stars for Sunny Hills were Jacob Cuccia--who had 83 yards and two touchdowns in nine carries--and Jason Nevadomsky on defense.

Fullerton quarterback Keith Ginter rushed for 59 yards and passed for 74.
