VALLEY ROUNDUP : 4 Taft Girls Go to Tennis Finals

Four members of the girls’ Taft High tennis team advanced to the City Section championships with preliminary-round victories Monday at the Racquet Centre in Studio City.

Taft’s Brahna Pastorini and Julia Feldman both earned semifinal-round victories, as did the Taft doubles team of Astra Ramyead and Alicia Whelan.

Pastorini, a junior who has not lost a match this season, defeated El Camino Real’s Amanda Cey, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), while teammate Feldman finished off her Palisades opponent in three sets.

Their victories set up an all-Taft singles final on Wednesday at the Racquet Centre.

Ramyead and Whelan defeated their Eagle Rock opponents, 7-5, 6-1, and will face a Palisades team in the final.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Canyon 100, Calabasas 41--Sophomore point guard Greg Minor scored 30 points, including eight three-point baskets, to lead the Cowboys’ rout in a nonleague opener for both schools.

Chaminade 63, Village Christian 56--The Eagles went to a man-to-man defense at halftime and rallied from a seven-point deficit to beat Village Christian in a first-round game of the Faith Baptist Tournament.

Village Christian senior Dave Fennell scored 21 of his 23 points in the first half.

Montclair Prep 64, Holy Martyrs 60--Greg Rosen scored 27 points to lead the Mounties to victory in the first round of the Faith Baptist Tournament. Point guard Blake Sonne added 11 points and seven assists. Bill Balian scored 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Holy Martyrs (0-1).

St. Genevieve 72, Moorpark 61--Ryan McGinnis scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Valiants to a first-round win over Moorpark in the Faith Baptist tournament.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Bell-Jeff 42, Hoover 33--Cathy Flores and Joan Batarina each scored 12 points to lead the Guards past Hoover in the opener for both. Bell-Jeff led, 22-18, at halftime but pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Hoover 12-3 for a 34-21 lead.
