Jays’ Wells to Give $50,000 to Point Loma High

David Wells, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher, will be the guest of honor at the Point Loma High winter sports rally, at which time he will give his alma mater a check for $50,000.

Wells’ donation will go toward the purchase of equipment for the athletic department’s weight room and help the baseball program, as well toward the school’s general education programs.

The rally is at 10:25 a.m. Wednesday at the school.

FOOTBALL

Some Holiday Bowl tickets can be purchased for the Dec. 30 game featuring Illinois and Hawaii at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Tickets are $34 each and can be ordered by calling 452-SEAT or 1-800-876-SEAT.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC San Diego fell to Lewis & Clark, 73-71, in the Redlands Tournament. Chris Moore led the Tritons with 14 points, but UCSD was out-rebounded, 36-26, and made only 11 of 17 free throws.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Twin sisters Falisha and Lakeysha Wright accounted for 29 points in San Diego State’s 59-45 nonconference victory over Loyola Marymount at Peterson Gym. Falisha had 23 points, five steals and four assists. Lakeysha, 5 feet 7, had a game-high nine rebounds. Christina Murguia added 14 points and also had nine rebounds for the Aztecs (2-0). Loyola is 1-1.

USD led by two at halftime but fell to Alabama Birmingham, 71-68, in the first round of the 7-Up Desert Classic at Nevada Las Vegas after freshman guard Laura King (13 points) hit the rim on a three-point shot with three seconds left. The Toreros (0-2), playing without suspended guard Angie Straub, got a game-high 20 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots from senior center Chris Enger.

TENNIS

Top-seeded Carol Baily of Steamboat Springs, Colo. and second-seeded Karen Gallagher of Vail, Colo. and advanced to the women’s 40 singles semifinals in the Senior Hardcourt tournament at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Baily defeated Cathie Anderson of Del Mar, 7-5, 6-2. Gallagher defeated No. 6 Judy Louie of Corona del Mar, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
