COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Advances in State Volleyball

Golden West continued its quest toward a third consecutive State title by sweeping Chabot in the first round of the State tournament Friday at American River College in Sacramento.

Tracy Schriber, a sophomore outside hitter, had 14 kills and freshman outside hitter Becki Gehlke added 12 kills for Golden West, which won, 15-10, 15-9, 15-12.

The Rustlers trailed, 12-10, in the final game before winning the final five points to close out the match. Golden West, the top-ranked team in the state, is 27-0 this season and has won 64 consecutive games.

“We were a little sluggish but we were OK,” Golden West Coach Albert Gasparian said. “We didn’t want to be too fired up yet.”

Golden West plays El Camino at 1 p.m. today in the second round.

In the Golden West men’s basketball tournament:

Irvine Valley 95, Golden West 81--Gabe Higa scored 29 points for Irvine Valley, which outscored Golden West, 61-47, in the second half after the teams were tied, 34-34, at the break. Dan Bathey added 20 points and Chris Kostoff 19 for Irvine Valley, which was seven of 39 on three-point tries. Josh Lewis had 19 points and nine rebounds for Golden West.

In the Orange Coast men’s tournament:

Imperial Valley 58, Orange Coast 48--Orange Coast led at the half, 28-21, but Imperial Valley rallied in the second half. Jeffrey Porter scored 19 points and Matt Manwarren added 11 points for OCC. Maurice Ramsey scored 18 for Imperial Valley in the semifinal-round game.

In the Cypress women’s tournament:

Cypress 61, Contra Costa 53--Yolanda Hearvey scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds, leading Cypress (7-1) to its seventh consecutive victory. Karleen Shields had 39 points and 11 rebounds for Contra Costa (3-5). Cypress will meet Ventura College, which defeated Chaffey, 70-58, in the other semifinal, in the championship game at 4 p.m. today.

In the College of the Sequoias women’s basketball tournament:

Golden West 71, DeAnza 38--Guard Melanie Iwamasa had 20 points and teammate Erica Miller had 13. Julie Jones led in rebounds with 12. Golden West (8-0) plays Fresno in the semifinals, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. today.

Fresno 65, Fullerton 41--Denise Donadio had 13 points for Fullerton (4-4) in the quarterfinal-round game.

In the semifinals of the Cuesta tournament:

Orange Coast 68, Bakersfield 59--Center LeAnn Kazmar had 17 points and 15 rebounds for Orange Coast (7-0) and teammate Colleen Hatch aded 14 points.
