Former Mater Dei High School outfielder Cale Carter will receive the U.S. Baseball Federation’s Golden Diamond award, presented to the top amateur baseball player in the state.
Carter batted .395 and led the county with 33 runs scored and had 15 stolen bases for Mater Dei, leading the Monarchs to the Southern Section 5-A quarterfinals.
He was selected in the 17th round of the amateur baseball draft by the Cleveland Indians, but decided to attend Stanford on a baseball scholarship. He graduated third in his class with a 4.5 grade-point average at Mater Dei.
The award, sponsored by Topps baseball cards, is given to players who display exceptional athletic skills, sportsmanship and exemplary character.
